RN to MSN

The Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) is available as an RN to MSN option to RNs who are interested in advanced practice. Students must be admitted to the RN to BSN program first. This option allows students to complete the MSN program along with the traditional BSN curriculum. Of the three graduate courses taken at the undergraduate level, two apply toward the BSN and one applies toward the MSN.

Division of Graduate Nursing Admission Requirements

The purpose of the MSN degree is to prepare advanced practice nurses within a rural setting. The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS), Adult Health is an advanced practice nurse with a concentration in a selected area of clinical nursing. Emphasis is placed on case management and differentiated practice. The CNS is prepared to function as an expert practitioner, leader, researcher, educator, and consultant.

To be eligible to apply for the RN to MSN track, the applicant must have
1. completed all non-nursing Murray State BSN requirements
2. a GRE score of 800
3. met all requirements for RN-BSN admission
4. a GPA of at least 3.0 throughout the program, and
5. 3 letters of favorable recommendation (forms from Department of Nursing).

Applications are due April 15 before the fall of desired admission. An interview is arranged for eligible candidates.

Once NUR 314 and NUR 201, a nursing elective and all non-nursing courses have been completed for the BSN, the student may apply to the MSN program. Each student must develop a schedule with assistance from the RN-BSN Coordinator and the Graduate Coordinator.

In essence, the advantage of the RN-MSN option is that graduate research (NUR 530) is taken instead of NUR 406, graduate issues (NUR 505) is taken instead of NUR 405.
