(Effective as of Fall 2000 grades.)
The
information on this sheet explains the process used to determine the
academic status of each student who has a cumulative GPA below 2.00, and
any restrictions that apply. Each of these students will have a hold
placed on her/his file that will block pre-scheduling in April or
November. After grades are processed for each term, students who are on
academic probation will be notified of their status, and will have holds
placed on their files that will prevent them from receiving financial aid
or appearing on class rolls. To have either of these holds removed, the
student must meet with an academic advisor and complete an Academic
Restoration Plan. ARP forms are available in all academic departments, and
the original copy of each student’s form must be on file in the
Registration Office no later than 4:00 p.m. of the official last day to
schedule.
Grade Point Average To calculate a cumulative grade point average, divide the total number of quality points earned by the total hours attempted. Transfer credit is included in the cumulative GPA. Grades of AU, CR, P, R, W or WP do not affect GPA calculations.
Academic Warning Undergraduates with fewer than 60 semester hours earned who have a cumulative GPA that is less than 2.00, but are not on probation, are mailed notifications that advise them that they are in danger of going on academic probation. See above for information on scheduling restrictions. This status is printed on the student’s grade report, but is not printed on the permanent record.
A new freshman who (1) is enrolled for his/her first term (fall or spring) at Murray State, and (2) has a term GPA of 0.00 should refer to the section on Academic Suspension. Any other undergraduate student will be placed on Academic Probation at the end of the first grading period in which her/his cumulative GPA falls below the appropriate threshold listed below. This status is printed on the student's grade report and permanent record. A student on probation may register for not more than 16 hours in a regular semester. (Note: Pre-Baccalaureate and Community College students are restricted to 16 hours per semester, regardless of their academic status.)
Note: A student whose class is "visiting" or "non-degree" must meet the same GPA requirement as the classification assigned to anyone with the same number of earned credit hours as that student has on record at Murray State.
An undergraduate student who has been placed on Academic Probation will be removed from this status if her/his cumulative GPA reaches or exceeds the appropriate threshold GPA indicated above.
An undergraduate student on probation at the end of a given term, or one who has been readmitted or reinstated on probation, will be continued on probation at the end of the following term, if the student’s cumulative GPA increases but does not reach the appropriate threshold indicated earlier. "Academic Probation Continued" is printed on the student's grade report and permanent record, and the student may register for not more than 16 hours in a regular semester. (Note: Pre-Baccalaureate and Community College students are restricted to 16 hours per semester, regardless of their academic status.)
A student classified as a new freshman will be on academic suspension at the end of her/his first semester (fall or spring) at Murray State if the student has a term GPA of 0.00. Any student only enrolled in courses that are graded pass/fail, who passes all of those courses, will not be suspended. Any undergraduate student on probation will be academically suspended from the university at the end of the next term enrolled (including summer) if minimum progress as defined under "Continued on Probation" is not met. This status is printed on the student's grade report and permanent record as "Academic Suspension." A student suspended for the first time may not re-enroll until one succeeding (fall or spring) term has passed. After that time, the student must submit an application for readmission to be considered for re-enrollment. See Reinstatement after Suspension. NOTE: Murray State will not accept for transfer any credits taken at another college or university during a student’s period of suspension. A student who feels there are extenuating circumstances may appeal for special consideration in writing to the Registrar, no later than seven days prior to the beginning of classes.
A student readmitted or permitted to enroll after an academic suspension or dismissal will be dismissed from the university if minimum progress as defined under "Continued on Probation" is not met. This status is printed on the student’s grade report and permanent record as "Academic Dismissal." A second academic suspension constitutes academic dismissal for a period of two calendar years. To re-enroll after that time, the student must submit an application for readmission. See Reinstatement after Suspension. A student suspended for the third time will not be allowed to re-enroll with Murray State.
Reinstatement After Suspension A student suspended for the first time may submit an application for readmission after a succeeding fall or spring semester has passed. A student suspended for the second time may submit an application for readmission after two full calendar years have passed. Students who are reinstated are readmitted on probation. A student who has been suspended for a third time may not re-enroll at Murray State.
Appeals A student who has been academically suspended or dismissed may appeal in writing to the Registrar's Office for special consideration when a repeated or lengthy illness or family emergency has been the cause of excessive absences from class and when the absences have been beyond the control of the student. All appeals must be on file at least 14 days before the first day of class of the relevant term. Students may not be allowed to appeal a second suspension at the discretion of the Academic Appeals Committee.
