MARC center becomes part of new consortium (cont.)

The Institute for Regional Analysis and Public Policy (IRAPP) at Morehead State University is announcing the official launch of the KentuckyView consortium. Murray State University's Mid-America Remote Sensing Center is one of the initial members of the consortium.

KentuckyView is one of 25 state consortiums that are part of AmericaView Inc., a nationwide program sponsored by the U.S. Geological Survey. The primary focus of KentuckyView is on the use of images collected from satellites and aircraft, as well as other geospatial technologies, to support K-16 education, workforce development, applied research and technology transfer.

Current projects include developing an archive of aircraft and satellite images to distribute to users free of charge, creating educational materials and providing outreach workshops and workforce training throughout the state.

KentuckyView is co-directed by two Morehead State faculty members affiliated with IRAPP, Dr. Zachary J. Bortolot and Dr. Christine E. McMichael.

In addition to Murray State, initial members of the KentuckyView consortium include: Institute for Regional Analysis and Public Policy, Morehead State University; Kentucky Division of Geographic Information; Kentucky Geological Survey; Department of Geography, Eastern Kentucky University; College of Agriculture, University of Kentucky; and Department of Geography and Geology, Western Kentucky University.

Membership in KentuckyView is completely free and voluntary and is open to a wide range of organizations from the academic, government, non-profit and private sectors that share the goal of improving life for citizens throughout the Commonwealth.

Member benefits include opportunities for data discounts and access to shared data sets, equipment, lesson plans and tutorials. Members are encouraged to contribute Kentucky remote sensing datasets and curriculum and outreach materials to promote awareness of KentuckyView and AmericaView Inc., and to participate in or provide input for the preparation of joint reports, documents and proposals.
