Counseling Services

We all encounter problems that are difficult to solve alone. We want you to know that you are not alone. We are here to help. To make an appointment, call (270) 809-6851. Services are limited to currently enrolled students. We employ a short term model of psychotherapy that empasizes resolving problems that may prevent a student from doing their best at our university. Please contact us if you have any questions regarding whether we can provide on campus services in a particular case.

Suggestions and service limitations regarding mental health therapy.

We do not provide long term mental health therapy; generally, we would consider more than eight sessions with a counselor per semester as a case in which a referral is required. We can assist students in obtaining referrals to providers of social work, counseling, psychological and psychiatric services for this purpose. Similarly, we will refer students who may require medical evaluation for initial scripts or refills for prescription medications used in the treatment of mental illness to area medical providers. Health Services at Murray State University does not provide these prescription services.

We strongly recommend that students who attend Murray State University while under the care of a provider of mental health services and who are likely to require long term psychotherapeutic support and/or medication for psychological/psychiatric illnesses consult with their primary care medical provider or their therapist about whether a referral should be set up with local medical providers.

Students are responsible for ascertaining whether existing or future health insurance plans in which they participate cover these services.

Some of the issues with which we can provide assistance include:

  • depression
  • anxiety
  • marital or dating problems
  • stress management
  • crisis intervention
  • rape crisis intervention
  • loneliness
  • homesickness
  • adjustment problems
  • addictive behaviors
