Hart College

In 1996 Murray State University became the first public university in the United States to implement a residential college system based upon the historic traditions of residential colleges at Oxford and Cambridge in England. Hart College is one of eight residential colleges on the campus of Murray State University.

Hart College is named for George S. Hart, a Murray civic leader and former member of the MSU Board of Regents.

As part of the residential college system, Hart College is more than just a dormitory or a place to live. It is a community of members – resident students, commuter students, faculty and staff who participate in activities and programs and share a common feeling of college identify and pride.

Hart College offers many different activities and experiences for a wide variety of student interests. Brought together by the symbols and traditions of Hart College, the members get to know many new friends and enjoy activities such as Fridays at Hart, faculty/staff student dinners, intramural sports, and recreational activities.

These activities are balanced with Hart College's tradition of academic success which is supported by an active Honor Society, a strong Speech and Debate Union, a vigorous Academic Team, dedicated faculty and staff, tutoring sessions and informal study groups.

Hart College has a strong tradition of community service. Relay for Life and the Heart Walk are among events supported by many members of the college. The Walk to D'Feat ALS, volunteer efforts with the Humane Society and the Animal Shelter, Habitat for Humanity, and food collections for Need Line are some of the community service activities for this academic year.

The Hart College crest has three fleur de lis which represent HOPE, EFFORT and ACHIEVEMENT and a red star which represents Hart among the eight residential colleges.

The Hart motto, "Faithful in Hart," encourages members to make a commitment to the Hart community and to a general sense of integrity in our lives.

The Hart College colors are black, silver and white, and the Hart mascot is the Raven.

The first College Head of Hart College was Dr. James "Corky" Broughton who served from 1996 – 2000. The second College Head was Dr. Chuck Hulick who served from 2000 – 2004. Dr. Ann Landini is the current College Head.
