DISCOVER
DISCOVER is a comprehensive computer
program that will help you with career planning. Whether you
want immediate up-to-date information or help with creating a complete
career plan, DISCOVER will meet your needs.
Since you will probably use DISCOVER
several times, be sure to sign on each time you use the program.
Your use of DISCOVER will then be saved in your own unique Career
Plan, which you can view on the screen and/or print at any time.
You may want to discuss your Career Plan with a counselor, advisor,
family member, or other adult.
FOR QUICK LOOKUPS AT ANY TIME
In DISCOVER's Main Menu, click on the buttons marked "Look
Up" in Halls 2 and 3 to access all alphabetical lists.
Help Desk (center)
Select this icon to view slide shows about the Control Panel,
the World-of-Work Map, and each of the four Halls in DISCOVER.
It's a good way to obtain a brief overview of the program or review
the features and basic operation.
Hall 1: Learn about Self and Career
(lower right corner)
The first part of this hall helps you
consider what you like to do, what you do well, and what you may value
in a job. You may take any or all three of the three inventories
at the computer in multimedia format (or enter your scores from the
paper/pencil format) and DISCOVER will then suggest job families
(groups of occupations) of ACT's World-of-Work Map for you to explore.
There are no right or wrong answers to these inventories, and this
section is especially helpful if you have not identified any
occupation(s) that might be a good match for you. You may also
enter scores from other non-DISCOVER inventories and tests you may
have taken.
The second part of this hall offers
videos to help you learn about life roles that make up your
"career", and you may want to compose your own career
rainbow. A slide show presents information about transitions,
and an activity can help you estimate how difficult or easy a
particular transition may be for you.
Hall 2: Choose Occupations (lower
left corner)
This section helps you identify possible
occupations and learn about them. Whether you have taken any of
the inventories in Hall 1, want to explore occupations on the
World-of-Work Map, want to do a search by characteristics (such as
salary, education level, etc.), or simply browse the master database,
there is a library of valuable information about occupations in
DISCOVER. Other look-up methods include occupations related to
high school subjects, majors, or military specialties. Videos
and slide shows abound in this hall-look for the "camera"
icon. Crosswalks are available to related majors and military
occupations. Internet hyperlinks (if available at your site)
provide immediate access to even more information at appropriate
occupational web sites. Be sure to save your favorite DISCOVER
occupations in your Career Plan.
Hall 3: Plan My Education (upper
left corner)
If you plan to receive further education
or training, this section is a "must". Hall 3 will
help you choose a major area of study related to your occupation
choice(s), find a school or institution that offers that major, and
search for scholarships and financial aid that may be available.
DISCOVER offers comprehensive national databases of
vocational-technical schools, two-year and four-year colleges,
graduate schools, and offering external degrees. A large
national database of scholarships is also available, in addition to a
Financial Aid Need Analysis form and other information about Federal
Financial Aid Programs. Use the crosswalks to move easily among
related topics. Internet hyperlinks (if available at your site)
provide immediate access to the websites of many schools and financial
aid sources. Remember to save your favorite DISCOVER majors,
schools, and scholarships in your Career Plan.
Hall 4: Plan for Work (upper
right corner)
This hall will help you prepare for the
job market. The sections about apprenticeships, internships, and
military service provide information about ways to combine learning
and paid employment. Myers-Briggs Type Indicator scores and
parts of the Values Inventory from Hall 1 may be used to help you
select an appropriate work setting and define your ideal job.
DISCOVER also helps you write a resume and cover letter, fill out a
job application, and learn how to look for jobs. Internet
hyperlinks (if available at your site) provide immediate access to job
banks, resume sites, and other related job-seeking websites.
And, be sure to take a look at the interactive interview samples,
where you can learn "do's and don'ts" by watching videos of
the job applicants in carious interviewing situations.
