career built from military parents who traveled Europe on motorcycles and
bragged about it, leading naturally to an undergraduate study abroad in
England and semester teaching in Japan. Melanie has
directed and assisted on study abroad programs in Belize, Costa Rica,
England, Ireland, and South Korea and led multiple workshops and sessions at
CIEE and NAFSA, is a member of NAFSA Trainer Corps, sits as Chair-Elect of
the Kentucky Council on Education Abroad, represents MSU on the Boards of
CCSA and KIIS, has consulted on faculty-led program development within the
Appalachian College Association, and co-authored Faculty-Led 360: Guide to
Successful Study Abroad (Agapy Press 2010). This text, along with Melanie's extensive work with faculty at MSU toward program development and faculty training has led to wide expansion of faculty-led programs at MSU, which received recognition in The Chronicle of Higher Education "Innovators in Internationalization" series in February 2010. In her spare time Melanie enjoys teaching with the
Commonwealth Honors Academy and the MSU Department of English and Philosophy,
putting her undergraduate BA in Creative Writing and MA TESOL to use. |
Robyn Pizzo

Office Coordinator and moved to the role of Advisor in March 2012. She
received her B.A. in English from Murray State University in 2009, and is
completing an M.A. in TESOL in May 2013. After studying abroad in
London, she caught the travel bug and has since traveled to Germany, France,
Italy, Greece, Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Tanzania and Ethiopia.
She plans to travel to every continent (with the possible exception of
Antarctica) within the next 5 years. She was a member of Class 9 of the
NAFSA Academy and recently presented at the NAFSA Annual Conference in
Houston and the NAFSA Region VI conference in Columbus, Ohio. |

Steven joined the Education Abroad Office in November
2012. He received his B.A. in Communications from the University of
Wisconsin Milwaukee in 2009 and his M.S. in Human Development & Leadership
(International Education Administration and College Student Personnel) from
Murray State in 2011. Steven studied abroad in South Korea on MSU Discover Korea in summer 2010, but his passion for travel and cultures
started at a much earlier age. Having family from Russia, hosting an
exchange student from Iceland, and developing friendships with exchange
students while in high school and college are all contributing factors to his desire to work in the field of international education. After his first
experience abroad in eighth grade to Panama, he has since traveled to
10 other countries. When Steven is not at work or traveling the world he is running. He has completed three full marathons and hopes to one day participate
in races internationally. |
Jamie Booth

2012. She graduated from Murray State in May 2012 with a BA in
History. Jamie started as an intern in the office in May 2012. After her year as interim Office Coordinator is over, Jamie plans to continue her
education, with plans of eventually earning a PhD in East Asian Women's
History. Developing her passion for study abroad at a young age, Jamie
made her first trip overseas, thanks to the People to People Student
Ambassador Program, at the age of 12. Since then Jamie has studied in
10 countries and 3 continents on 5 study abroad programs. Most
recently, she spent the Fall of 2011 in Regensburg, Germany.

Kari Shemwell

and statistics, scholarship service hours, events, general questions Kari has been a member of the study abroad team since October of 2012.
She is an undergraduate senior with majors in English and Spanish. Kari
intends to obtain masters degrees and eventually doctoral degrees in
languages, history, and literature. Kari studied abroad in Berlin,
Germany during the summer of 2012 with the KIIS Berlin program. This
summer she intends to study abroad in Chile with the Murray State
Signature program. Kari has also spent two summers in Panama and has
visited Mexico and Belize.
