FAQ

What is orientation?

The college experience at Murray State begins with Summer Orientation. All new incoming freshmen are expected to attend one of the seven one-day sessions available. Summer O has been designed to assist you in developing an understanding about the transition you will make to your collegiate environment and to enhance your success in college.

Attending orientation will be your earliest chance to register for fall classes. If you do not attend a Summer O session, you are not allowed to sign up for classes until after the last orientation session occurs.

Who may attend?

All new incoming freshmen who have been admitted for the Fall 2009 semester are eligible to attend Summer O.

What if I graduated high school before 2009?

OASIS (Orientation for Adult Students in School) is a program designed for non-traditional students. Information and registration materials for OASIS will be mailed in May from the MSU Community College. For immediate assistance, please contact the coordinator of Adult Student Services at (270) 809-2186 or (800) 669-7654.

If I am a transfer student, do I have to attend Summer O?

Transfer students are not required to attend an orientation session. Transfer students can schedule at the same time as currently enrolled Murray State students. However, as a transfer student, you are welcome to come to an orientation session to familiarize yourself with the campus, but you must register and pay the fee to attend.

Am I required to stay throughout the entire program?

Yes, students must participate throughout the entire day to register for classes. Students who arrive late or leave early will be required to reschedule for another date.

What should I bring?

The program itself is very informal. You should bring:

  • Cool, comfortable clothes
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Umbrella if rain is predicted

If you plan to take placement tests, you should bring the latest copy of your ACT scores.

Is there a cost to attend orientation?

Yes, the orientation fee is $100. This fee covers all costs for the student and any parent(s) or guest(s). This fee is required at the time you make your reservation. You can pay online with either a credit/debit card or by electronic check. If you do not have access to this, you may print a copy of the registration form, complete it and mail it to the following office with a check or money order.

Make checks payable to: Murray State University

Mail checks to: Office of Recruitment, 500 Sparks Hall, Murray KY 42071.

Is there an orientation program for my parents?

Yes, orientation to college is as important to parents as it is to students. That is why we have designed an orientation program for parents which coincides with the students' schedule. Parents will be with their student part of the day, but at certain times, parents will be in sessions designed to address their questions and concerns. During the registration of classes, parents are NOT permitted in the ballroom because of space limitations and to ensure the student learns this important process themself.

Are special accommodations available for individuals with disabilities?

Yes, if you or someone attending with you has a disability which requires special accommodations for full participation in the orientation program, please call the Office of Equal Opportunity at ( 270) 809-3155.

What if I need to arrive early?

All of the Summer Orientation programs are one day and do not require an overnight stay. However, if you are driving a long distance you may choose to come the night before. On the Summer O website, there is a link to hotel information under "Accommodations". If you have any questions about these hotels or other possible accommodations, please feel free to call the Office of Recruitment at (800) 272-4678 ext. 2.

Will I pay my fall tuition during Orientation?

No, your tuition and fees bill will be mailed to you around mid-July if you have already attended orientation by that time. If you attend one of the later programs, your bill will be mailed a few days after that session. Please make a payment by the date shown on the bill to avoid your class schedule being cancelled. If you have any questions regarding billing, Bursar's Office personnel will be available during orientation, or you may call them at (800) 272-4678 ext. 5.

What is the Honors Program?

The Murray State Honors Program is designed to enrich the educational experience of highly motivated students by increasing the opportunity for interacting with outstanding faculty, both in small class settings such as Honors seminars, and in ongoing research experiences. The Honors Program emphasizes enriched versions of the university studies requirements during the freshman and sophomore years. On the junior and senior levels, it supplements the specialized course work with individual study and research. Students much possess an ACT score of 26 or above and complete a separate application for admission to the program. For more information visit their website at www.murraystate.edu/honors or call at (270) 809-3166.

Are placement tests involved in orientation?

See testing page.

What is your refund policy?

All Summer Orientation fees are NON-REFUNDABLE.

What if I need to change my date of Summer Orientation?

If you need to change the date, or change the name(s) of parent(s) or guest(s), you can go online and make changes to your reservation using your Username and Password. Just log in to your account and make any necessary changes. If a date does not show up as an option that means the session is full.
