Conference Focuses on Strengthening a Business Using e-Commerce

March 21, 2002

Many existing businesses across the country are improving their profit margins by adding an e-commerce strategy. Why aren't more business owners taking advantage of this opportunity? "They do not have the skills needed to implement e-commerce," says Steve Zea of the West Kentucky Corporation. The second annual West Kentucky Economic Development Conference will provide the know-how for such implementation. This conference, sponsored by Murray State University's Center for Telecommunications Systems Management, West Kentucky Corporation, BellSouth, and the Chambers of Commerce of West Kentucky, is intended to give attendees practical information about setting up an e-commerce business.

This conference, for the business community west of the Pennyrile, will be held in Paducah's Information Age Park on Tuesday, April 9 beginning at 9:00 a.m. The objective is to help existing businesses add an e-commerce dimension that will improve their bottom line. "It may surprise business owners to find out how their business operation could be adapted to utilize an e-business strategy," says Phil Sparks, a former business owner, who now directs Murray State University's Center for Telecommunications Systems Management. "Unfortunately, those who do not attend may eventually find that competitive businesses outside the area are eating into their customer base using an e-commerce strategy."

The information will also be valuable to economic development directors, chamber of commerce executives, city officials and county judge executives who consult daily with business owners in their area. The daylong activity will include the topics "Building an e-Commerce Strategy," " Obstacles to Overcome," and " Using the Internet for Supply Chain Management." One session will interview those who have successfully implemented e-business into their operations. Kentucky's Commissioner for the New Economy, Dr. William Brundage, will also pay a visit and tell how his office proposes to help West Kentucky with new economy initiatives. There is a $25.00 registration fee that includes lunch. Registration needs to be made by calling the West Kentucky Corporation, (270) 762-3295, by April 5.
