School Counseling and Clinical Mental Health Counseling

The Counselor Education (CNS) Program at Murray State University is a CACREP Accredited program (see below) dedicated to providing quality education and training for individuals pursuing a profession in the field of counseling or school psychology. Program options include a Master of Arts in School Counseling and an Education Specialist with emphasis in School Counseling, Clinical Mental Health Counseling or School Psychology, as well as related school counseling and school psychology endorsements. These programs are designed for persons with an academic and/or experiential background in the helping professions such as, but not limited to, education, social work, psychology, and communication disorders. Professional Counseling is a dynamic and invaluable career in today’s world of mental health care and is a necessary and compatible companion to other mental health professions.

Career Outlook – According to the United States Department of Labor:

  • “Employment of mental health counselors and marriage and family therapists is projected to grow 19 percent from 2014 to 2024, much faster than the average for all occupations. Growth is expected in both occupations as more people have mental health counseling services covered by their insurance policies.”
  • “Employment of school and career counselors is projected to grow 8 percent from 2014 to 2024, about as fast as the average for all occupations. Increasing school enrollments should lead to employment growth of school and career counselors”
