The next Vocal Arts Camp will be June 7-13, 2020. 

Welcome to Murray State University’s Vocal Arts Camp (VAC). This week-long camp will immerse 9th-12th grade students in the vocal arts, to encourage and educate students in the areas of musicianship and healthy vocal production. Students will receive voice instruction, acting and movement classes, and music literacy classes. Students will present a performance of a mixture of solo, chamber, and choral music on the final day of the program. No previous vocal training is required.

5:00-6:00 p.m.  Dinner and introduction by faculty

6:00-7:30 p.m.  Auditions and student assessments

7:30-8:30 p.m.  Choral rehearsal

8:30-10 p.m.  Free time

Monday - Thursday

7:30-8:20 a.m.  Breakfast

8:30-9:20 a.m.  Group voice lesson/sectionals

9:30-10:45 a.m.  Choral rehearsal

11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.  Lunch

12:00-1:00 p.m.  Acting for Singers/Music Literacy

1:00-2:00 p.m.  Acting for Singers/Music Literacy

2:00-3:00 p.m.  Music Electives

3:00-5:00 p.m.  Music and blocking rehearsal for showcase

5:00-6:00p.m.  Dinner

7:00 p.m.  Evening activities (bowling, talent show, movie night, etc.)


Same as Monday - Thursday except no Electives, just rehearsal for Showcase from 3:00-5:00pm and Dress Rehearsal at 6:00, after dinner.

Description of Classes

Voice Instruction: Students will work on healthy vocal production, diction, communication, and style.

Music Literacy: Students will develop sight reading skills to help learn music efficiently and accurately. Rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic structures will be explored.

Acting for singers: Students will engage in a series of improvisational exercises and dramatic preparation to help with character development of vocal repertoire.


The workshop fee is $500 for resident campers. This fee includes tuition, room (double occupancy), board (three meals a day), accident insurance, and most instructional materials. The fee for commuter students is $400, which includes tuition, accident insurance, most instructional materials, and lunch daily.


We have several talent and need-based scholarships available. To be considered for a scholarship, please submit a recent video or audio recording, and a letter of recommendation to Maribeth Crawford at VACmurraystate@gmail.com. The recordings should contain at least one memorized song selection with an accompaniment.


The deadline to complete both registration steps is May 18, 2020. The camp may reach full enrollment before this date, so be sure to secure your spot early.  For more information about the camp and scholarships, contact Dr. Maribeth Crawford.
