Vocal Arts Camp (V.A.C.)

Camp Dates: June 9-15, 2019

 Welcome to Murray State University’s Vocal Arts Camp (VAC). This week-long camp will immerse 9th-12th grade students in the art of solo singing. Each day, students will receive voice lessons, acting and movement classes, and a studio voice class. Students will also participate in a mock musical theatre audition, or a mock college audition, and receive feedback from faculty to help prepare for future auditions.  Participants will perform in a student showcase recital at the end of the week. No previous vocal training is required. 

This year’s workshop will focus on building solid vocal technique, characterization for singers, and audition etiquette and preparation.

Descriptions of Classes

Voice lessons/Vocal Coachings- 45 minute private voice lesson with faculty. Students will work on vocal technique (such as phonation, breathing, and resonance), diction, communication, style, and musical preparation.

Musicianship skills: Students will learn skills to help develop their own musical literacy. Basic rhythmic, melodic, and harmonic structures will be explored to help students learn music efficiently and accurately.

Performance class: Students will have the opportunity to work with faculty on performance repertoire in a group setting.

Acting for singers: Students will engage in a series of improvisational exercises and dramatic preparation to help with character development of vocal repertoire.

Audition etiquette and mock auditions: Students will learn valuable skill to help with audition preparation and success. As an exercise, each student will have the chance to participate in a mock audition, with immediate feedback from faculty.

Tuition 

The workshop fee is $450 for resident campers. This fee includes tuition, room (double occupancy), board (three meals a day), accident insurance, and most instructional materials. The fee for commuter students is $350, which includes tuition, accident insurance, most instructional materials, and lunch daily.

Scholarships

We have several talent based scholarships available.  To be considered for a scholarship, please submit a recent video or audio recording, and a letter of recommendation. The recordings should contain one memorized song selection with piano accompaniment. If you are applying for a scholarship, please register for camp (Step 1, below) with a $250 deposit, by entering promo code DEPOSIT2019 at check out.  After scholarships are awarded, any balance dues not covered by a scholarship should be paid before or at camp check-in.  

Registration

There are two steps to completing registration.
The deadline to complete both registration steps is April 26, 2019. Camp may reach full enrollment before this date, so be sure to secure your spot (Step 1) early.
Step 1: To secure your spot in the camp, register and pay for the camp

Step 2: In order to assign solos for each camper, campers should submit a recent video or audio recording containing one song and a C Major octave scale. The recording does not need to be of professional quality. Feel free to use the recording device found on most smartphones and/or tablets. If you do not have access to a pianist, you may record a cappella. If you aren’t sure what to sing, feel free to sing “Happy Birthday,” “The Star Spangled Banner,” or “Amazing Grace.”

For the C major scale, you may listen to this YouTube video. Feel free to sing this on a “la” or whatever vowel or syllable you feel is most comfortable. You may also record yourself singing with the video.
