Camps held in Paducah, Murray, and Hopkinsville
All children and teens, grades K-12, are invited to attend a Murray State University Chess Camp. In partnership with West Kentucky Chess, LLC, under the direction of Tom Knight, these camps are inspired by the teachings and legacy of Dr. Wayne Bell, West Kentucky’s legendary chess educator and advocate. Campers will choose from three locations: Murray, Paducah, or Hopkinsville and from a morning session or afternoon session. The Chess Camps are open to all levels of chess experience, and all campers grades K-12. Campers will receive instruction based on their playing level and will be grouped with other players of similar skill/age.
Students that enter the chess camp will explore the history of the game, board/piece basics, the object/how to capture, tactics/strategy. Campers will gain the independence required by every player when competing, no matter if they’ve never played before, or are experienced competitors. Campers will also learn about competition conduct, rankings, and how to find opportunities for further play and competition. The schedule will consist of daily lessons, open chess play, and the last two days of the week, campers will experience competition and tournament conduct practice.
Strategic Gaming Camp
New this year, and exclusively at our Paducah location, we will offer a Strategic Gaming Camp. This specialized camp will open the doors beyond chess into other games that require planning and strategy. Campers will learn techniques to overcome hurdles and achieve strategic goals, while playing other board games and strategy based games. This camp is open to rising 5th - 12th graders of all skill levels, but campers should have a basic understanding of strategy and planning when playing a game.
Morning camps will be 8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. and afternoon camps will be 12:00 p.m. -3:00 p.m.
