Q&A

Who is your favorite professor and why?
Jim Bryant. He has helped me find what I am passionate about doing for the rest of my life and he has assisted me in learning all of the skills required to do so. He has been the greatest influence on my life as a professor and advisor. He also was the one who convinced me to study abroad with him in China.

Katherine MerimeeWhat do you think makes the city of Murray special?
The community. Everyone is so friendly and willing to help. That’s a rare thing to find in cities today. It definitely deserves the title “Friendliest Small Town”.

If you could spend an hour with anyone, who would it be and why? What would you ask them?
Hayao Miyazaki. He is my greatest hero and influence. I have been watching his movies since I was a little girl. His movies inspired me to draw from a young age and it would be a dream to work alongside him at Studio Ghibli. I would ask what led him to become an artist and in turn to become an animator.

How do you define success?
When you feel like you have met or exceeded the expectations of your peers, your supervisors, and most of all yourself because everyone is their own hardest critic.

What’s an interesting fact about you that would surprise most people?
I can play pretty much any percussion instrument. I played in school band from 7th grad until I came to Murray for college.

What do you like about yourself?
I have a lot of common sense that guides my decisions on a daily basis.

What is your favorite book and why?
All You Need is Kill. It is an incredible fiction story that deals with the importance of human connection and cooperation. It really hit home with me because of how difficult it can be to form bonds with others.

What is your favorite quote?
“You must see with eyes unclouded by hate. See the good in that which is evil, and the evil in that which is good. Pledge yourself to neither side, but vow instead to preserve the balance that exists between the two.” – Hayao Miyazaki

Katherine Says:

“The reason I chose Murray State was my past experiences with it. My sister attended Murray State also and I would come visit her at school, so Murray became a pretty well-known area for me, which was comforting. I had also heard many great things about Murray’s Art Department. So, I made my decision pretty easily and have yet to be proven wrong in my choice.”
