Why did you choose MSU?

The summer before my senior year of high school, I attended the Commonwealth Honors Academy (CHA) program at MSU. This program allowed me to take 2 college level classes and to live on campus for 3 weeks. This time allowed me to fall in love with the campus and allowed me to see how great the professors were. When it came time to apply to schools, I only applied to Murray because I knew that it was the right place for me.

What do you want to do after graduation?
I am working on becoming a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and I plan to get a job as an auditor at a public accounting firm.

Rachel BlalockWho is your favorite professor and why?
I took Accounting Theory with Dr. Tim Miller, the current MSU President, the last semester he taught before taking the President position. As a professor, Dr. Miller made the class more about the real world than about memorizing concepts out of a textbook. He was able to take his experiences and use them to get students excited about the future. Dr. Miller helped me see just how many opportunities there are for accountants and how gratifying of a career it can be.

What's something you've accomplished at MSU that you're most proud of and why?

On December 26, 2012, I left for a 2 week study abroad program in Italy and Greece. Before signing up for this program, I didn't know anyone else that was going and I had never left the country. This was a huge decision for me and a giant step out of my comfort zone. I am so glad that I went though with this program because I learned a lot about myself and I made memories that are irreplaceable.

What do you think makes the city of Murray special?
Growing up in a small town, you get used to people being friendly. However, in a bigger town, you don't necessarily expect people to be kind and caring. Since I have been at Murray, I have learned that this is an extremely close-knit community full of people that want to see Murray thrive.
What is your favorite MSU tradition?
I enjoy going to football games and cheering for Racer One as he/she makes the lap around the stadium after a touchdown. This is such a unique tradition and it doesn't matter if we score once or ten times, I feel a sense of pride for MSU every time Racer One makes the lap.

What is your favorite book and why?
The Harry Potter series has helped to teach me about friendship, responsibility, sacrifice, dedication, and bravery. I grew up with these books and every time I read them, I learn something new about myself or about the world around me, depending on where I am at in my life. There is a timelessness to them that allows them to continue to give life perspective.

Rachel says
I am active in the Accounting Society and Beta Alpha Psi and I also work for the CFSB Center and for Brighter Horizons Daycare. I enjoy having to manage my time and being involved in a lot of different activities and because of your scholarship, I have been able to devote more time to my studies because I haven't had to take on a more full time position.
