Ron Johnson 'Vast' (an art exhibition)

Clara M. Eagle Art Gallery

15th Street
Murray, KY 42071

The Murray State University Art Galleries and the Department of Art & Design are pleased to present Vast, a solo exhibition by Richmond, VA based artist Ron Johnson.

Ron Johnson is engaged in the language of color field painting. Playful yet methodical, Johnson’s process-driven work is defined by chance. Pouring pigmented polyurethane over wood panels, he investigates the effects of layering transparent color. Landscape continues to influence his work, strictly as inspiration, mostly in regard to spatial interactions, palette choice, and perception.

Johnson takes an annual drive from Richmond, VA to various states west to drive, think, and walk. He connects with the landscape in an exciting new way and translates what is experienced into paintings inspired by the vastness he encounters on these journeys. In a recent Art Pulse interview, he states “The medium allows me to control (for the most part) this idea of translucency, which in turn allows the viewer to access my work in layers. So viewers are literally able to see the archeology, or experience my thoughts in an archeology of seeing.” What you see in this exhibition is vibrant, abstracted landscapes simultaneously constrained and released in flowing pools of acrylic.

Vast is on view August 17 - September 21, 2017

Ron Johnson will present an Artist Talk about his past and recent artworks on Thursday, September 21 at 5PM in room 623 located on the 6th Floor of the Pryce Doyle Fine Arts Center.

Admission is free and open to the public.
