Do you think oral history projects are just for historians? Do you want your students to have a richer understanding of your discipline?
Oral histories are beneficial not only for history classrooms, but they are invaluable primary sources that help to enhance students’ understanding of the historical period for any academic discipline. Dr. Melony Shemberger, assistant professor of journalism and mass communications, will discuss lessons learned from integrating an oral history project in an undergraduate course. Challenges, experiences, outcomes and best practices will be shared in this presentation.

Reasons to apply oral history interviewing techniques in any course.
A summary of the community engagement project using oral history.
Strategies that were used in this class project.
Best practices for using oral histories in a course.
