About the Artist:

John Utgaard grew up in Carbondale, Illinois, and initially became interested in ceramics while in high school. In the summers, his father taught at a field geology camp near Red Lodge, Montana, and from an early age Utgaard was influenced by the scope and solitude of the western landscape. He is an alumnus of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, the Kansas City Art Institute and Alfred University, where he received his MFA in 1999. In addition to having been a resident and Lilian fellow at the Archie Bray Foundation, Utgaard has received a McKnight fellowship from the Northern Clay Center in Minneapolis as well as has been honored by NCECA in 2003 as an emerging artist and in 2007 as a demonstrator. Utgaard currently teaches at Murray State University, where he is the head of the ceramics area.

Recent exhibitions that have featured John’s work include a 2015 solo show at the Cedarhurst Center for the Arts titled "Vivid Dreams," the 2017 "Beyond the Brickyard" exhibition at the Archie Bray Foundation and the 2018 sixth annual "Central Time Ceramics" exhibition at Bradley University.
