Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education (P-5) or
Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education (P-5)
BS/BA degrees in elementary education are four-year programs at the Murray main campus. Students may also build upon their community college degrees to earn BS degrees at any of the regional 2+2 campuses in Henderson, Hopkinsville, Madisonville, or Paducah. Students complete courses in University Studies, professional education, and one area of academic emphasis. During the program, they spend over 200 hours observing, tutoring, and teaching elementary students. Seniors demonstrate what they have learned through a semester-long student teaching experience and the completion of an eligibility portfolio. For certification, students must earn a passing score on Praxis and PLT exams. Students completing the program are qualified to teach kindergarten through fifth grade students. The final step to full professional teacher certification involves successful completion of the KTIP internship year in Kentucky, although certification requirements vary from state to state. Because Murray State University's College of Education is NCATE accredited, a degree in elementary school education with teacher certification is transferable to most other states.
Master of Arts in Education Teacher Leader: Elementary
This MA degree program is designed to fulfill course requirements for Rank II classification. Applicants must hold an Early Elementary (K-4, P-5, 1-8) Provisional Certificate or its equivalent. Students complete 30 semester hours of pre-planned graduate level course work which consists of five core courses plus either an area of elementary specialization or an area of endorsement plus one elective. To demonstrate their teacher leadership, students complete two major leadership projects.
Specialist in Teacher Education and Professional Development: Elementary
The Ed.S. program is designed to fulfill course requirements for Rank I classification. Applicants must hold a Rank II Certificate or its equivalent, and must have completed a Masters Degree. This 30-hour program is pre-planned with a specialist committee consisting of three faculty members. In addition to core requirements, courses for specialization are selected to enhance current certification or to work toward new certification or to address professional needs and interests. As a capstone experience, students complete and orally defend a specialty study.
