Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts Degree in Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education (Birth to Primary)
The Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education (IECE) NCATE accredited program prepares our graduates to provide early intervention, care and educational services for infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and kindergarten children with and without disabilities and their families. The program includes courses in early childhood special education, child development, early childhood, and professional education. Center-based early childhood programs, and public school preschool and kindergarten classrooms provide you with field and clinical experiences.  Our 2+2 Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education (IECE) program, at MSU’s Madisonville, Henderson and Hopkinsville Regional Campuses, provide course work and practicum experiences for students from around the West KY region. The program requires you to participate in a semester long teaching experiences in appropriate settings. Completion of the IECE program leads to a birth to primary teaching certification. In addition, you must pass the IECE Praxis exam as part of the certification requirements.

If you are an undergraduate student in the IECE program, you will complete program of study in three general areas. First, they complete the Murray State University’s required University Studies Program. Second, students are required to complete the professional education course sequences. Finally, they must complete content area requirements in the IECE emphasis. Master of Arts in Special Education/Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education (Birth to Primary)
Appropriate undergraduate majors for program entry in the MA SE/IECE program are elementary education, early childhood education, special education, communication disorders, or other human service fields.  A minimum of 3.0 GPA is required for completion of this NCATE approved program. You may contact the Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education program coordinator through links on the top of this page.
Students can choose from three tracks in the MA Special Education/Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education program. Track one is an initial certification program designed for students seeking their first certification in any education field.  Students must meet all university requirements for admission to Teacher Education, pass clinical experiences in IECE as well as receive a pass the IECE Praxis exam.

Track two is a certification program and leads to eligibility for a certification in interdisciplinary early childhood education, birth to primary. Exit assessments for the certification programs include pass on practicum, an exit portfolio and the IECE Praxis exam.

The third track is the Master of Arts in Education Teacher Leadership: Special Education/Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education program.  This program is designed for students who have an undergraduate degree in Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education and the IECE certification.  Completion of this 30 hour program leads to continuing certification in IECE, and Master’s Degree in Education, a Rank II (for Kentucky), and the Teacher Leadership Endorsement (for Kentucky).

Master of Arts Teacher Leadership Program Advising Guide

The IECE program includes course work, practicum experiences and expertise from faculty with diverse backgrounds and areas of specialization.  Courses include opportunities for applied activities, collaboration activities, research, reflection and discussion.
