The Department of English and Philosophy helps students explore the world of words and ideas while preparing for a variety of creative and dynamic careers. Students majoring in the department's programs can look forward to success in fields such as creative writing, technical writing, business, publishing, teaching, law, and journalism. Through their studies at Murray State, English and Philosophy majors gain the flexibility of a well-developed mind, a facility with the power of language, and the analytical skills employers want.

Featured Program: Undergraduate TESOL

We are delighted to introduce this exciting new program in the commonwealth of Kentucky.

Undergraduate TESOL

According to the Kentucky Department of Education, students in Kentucky’s public schools speak approximately 100 different native languages. Murray State University's Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) program trains students in the development of knowledge and skills needed to succeed as teachers of the English language to non-native speakers in the school setting, from pre-Kindergarten to 12th grade. This is the only program of its kind in Kentucky. Learn more about it.

NEWS and NOTES

Scholarship Established to Memorialize Philosophy Professor

Dr. Franklin Robinson, professor emeritus, passed away at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, Tenn., on Nov. 30, 2008. He taught philosophy at Murray State from 1968 until 2008. During that time, Dr. Robinson served as a department chair for several years. Learn about him, and the scholarship.
