MSU Reading Experience

The MSU Reading Experience is an exciting opportunity to foster the intellectual—and tremendously fun—pursuit of reading at Murray State University. In years past, the event was known as the Freshman Reading Experience. We changed the name because, as we’ve discovered to our delight, people across the campus community engage in the reading each year, and we want to encourage people university-wide to participate.

The purpose of the MSU Reading Experience is:

- To provide a common academic experience for incoming freshmen.

- To introduce students to intellectual life at, and academic expectations of, Murray State University.

- To foster an active awareness of, and appreciation for, diversity.

- To create a greater sense of community among students, faculty, and staff.

- To establish an appreciation for reading and participating in cultural events.

The 2012 MSU Reading Experience book is Never Let Me Go (2010) by Kazuo Ishiguro. Set in the 1990s, Never Let Me Go weaves the tale of three young people enrolled in a mysterious, even bizarre, English boarding school called Hailsham. The rules are strange and the teachers even more so as we explore the lives of Kathy, Ruth and Tommy. To say more would spoil the suspense of this gripping novel.

Once again this year, the MSU Reading Experience committee has lined up a great series of events related to the novel—a printmaking session, a poetry workshop and a film festival, to name a few—and tied to our theme for 2012-2013, “Humanity and the Humanities.” Other special events will include a lecture by professor David Canning regarding bioethics, as well as presentations by members of the humanities faculty about the relevance of the humanities in the 21st century.
