4th Annual Men's Invitational: Results

Keeping it in the Family

By MICHAEL DANN - Sports Editor, Murray Ledger & Times

Nick Newcomb (right), 2009 Men's Invitational winner, was congratulated by Miller Memorial Director of Golf, Will Snodgrass.

For at least another year, the Miller Memorial Invitational will stay in the Newcomb family.

Patrick Newcomb was unable to defend his crown over the weekend, but older brother and Murray State senior Nick Newcomb torched the backside, birding No. 17 and 18 to shoot 70, giving him a two-stroke victory over Hunter York.

York turned in a 70 on Saturday, only to post a nine-under 63 on Saturday. Newcomb made Sunday's turn at 1-over par and tied with York for the lead as he played his final nine.

York's score was nice, but wasn't as eye-popping as Newcomb's 10-under, 61 he shot on Saturday. The current Racer stuck to his guns Sunday.

"I just wanted to play my normal game, Newcomb said. "I wasn't down or upset about anything. I just wanted to play solid and I knew if I did, I could probably get a few birdies out of it. If I did that, I knew I would be fine."

Newcomb's two stroke lead is the second time in as many years as a Newcomb has won the Invitational. Last year's winner Patrick Newcomb finished third this year with a 67-67=134. York was second with a 70-63=133 and Craig Schwettman was fourth with a 67-69=136.

In the First Flight, Brian Henson took home top prize. A former Miller Invitational winner, Henson shot a 72-65=137. Eli Towery was second with a 74-68=42 and Jay Connell shot a 74-69=143.

The 2nd Flight championship went to Travis Bradford, who carded a two day total of 147 with a 79-68. Jerry Parker shot 77-71=148 and Mark Boggess finished 78-71=149.

In the 3rd Flight, Tim Sweeny had a two-stroke advantage over Al Davis. Sweeny shot a 81-62=153 and Davis finished 81-74=155. Mark Denham shot 81-74=155 to finish in third place.

Bill Fenton took home the 4th Flight championship with a 86-77=163, while Jerry Weaver shot a 89-75=164 and Fred Steward, who finished third, carded a 85-81=166.

In the 5th Flight, Mike Schroader shot 92-82=174. Dan Jones, David Wolfe and Thomas Seifert all tied for second with a two day total of 179.
