Program in Personal Financial Planning
There is a growing awareness of the importance of financial planning,
both as a component of our day-to-day lives and as a career choice.
MSU recognized this importance and has registered a financial planning
track for
the undergraduate program with the prestigious Certified
Financial Planner Board of Standards (CFP Board).
The CFP Board is a
nonprofit regulatory organization that fosters professional
standards in personal financial planning. The CFP Board of Standards
registers
undergraduate and graduate degree programs offered
by regionally accredited U.S. colleges and universities. At a minimum,
each Registered Program
must cover certain topics, generally at the highest
cognitive levels. Those topics are determined by a job analysis study
of financial planning
practitioners who are currently certified by CFP Board
and entitled to use CFP Board’s certification marks. This topic list helps to ensure that the curriculum content offered by Registered Programs covers the knowledge considered important to perform the tasks required of a CFP® certificant,
thus meeting marketplace requirements.
MSU began the formal process
to register a program with the CFP Board of Standards
in Fall 2003. The program was formally approved in 2004.
Rationale for the program
The objective of the degree program is to prepare the students at Murray State University for a career in the financial services industry. It does so by exposing them to the tools and techniques necessary for them to be able to competently perform high-quality, comprehensive financial planning. Participation in the program will enable the students to meet the educational requirements needed to sit for the CFP® Certification Examination.
