Gender Studies Certificate
The Certificate in Gender Studies is an interdisciplinary course of study that is designed to complement traditional, disciplinary graduate and professional degree programs. The objectives are:
- to provide students with opportunities to think in an interdisciplinary fashion about issues of gender and sexuality,
- to provide students with instruction and practice in employing the methods they learn in their degree programs toward inquiries into issues of gender and sexuality,
- to enable recipients of the certificate to teach in the area of gender studies at the post-secondary level, and
- to prepare students for further graduate study in the areas of gender and sexuality.
Requirements for Admission:
Applicants must comply with the Murray State University requirements. Additional requirements for unconditional admission are as follows:
- An undergraduate degree or current enrollment in graduate or professional degree program;
- For non-native speakers of English, a TOEFL score of 20 for each section of the iBT, an IELTS score of 6.5 with no band lower than 6.0, a previous degree earned from an accredited U.S. institution, or successful completion of Level VI of the Murray State ESL program;
- For unconditional admission, an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher;
- For conditional admission, program judgment of probable success based on GRE (Graduate Record Exam) scores, letters of recommendation, and/or other evidence such as planned program of prerequisite courses.

Human Development and Leadership Certificate (Online)
Certificate programs are a specialized set of courses emphasizing a professional skill or knowledge base offered by Murray State University. Certificate programs enhance an existing degree discipline or provide additional educational background in a new field or profession. The requirements for admission vary by program and programs typically range from 12 to 21 credit hours. Successful completion of certificate program requirements will be posted on the student’s transcript. The maximum completion time allowed is eight years from the start of certificate coursework. MSU Certificate programs are neither degree programs, initial teacher certification programs, nor a Rank change certified by the KY Educational Professional Standards Board. Please contact the program coordinator in the area in which you are interested for more information.
The Human Development and Leadership Certificate program is designed for individuals working in positions such as administrative, program development, or direct services positions in a wide range of settings. This certificate will provide additional information and skills for those with leadership responsibilities or for those wanting to move toward assuming a greater leadership role. The four courses focus on the self (HDL660), working with diverse individuals and cultures (HDL670), developing an understanding of and how to utilize assessments in non-clinical settings (HDL675), and understanding the process of working in and with groups (HDL692). This certificate will be offered 100% online.
The Human Development and Leadership certificate program is administered by the Coordinator of the HDL program, housed within the Educational Studies, Leadership and Counseling department, College of Education. HDL faculty within the department will assist the Coordinator as needed in developing and reviewing the program objectives, approving courses within the HDL program, and approving student projects and requests for course substitutions.
Requirements for Admission:
Students with an undergraduate degree or those currently enrolled in a graduate or professional degree program may apply for the Human Development and Leadership Certificate program. Persons who already hold a graduate degree may also apply for the Certificate program.
Applicants must comply with Murray State University requirements (see College of Education chapter in the current Graduate Bulletin). For unconditional admission, an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher is required. For conditional admission, applicants will be required to write a letter explaining their GPA, what has changed that would lead to the probability of success in the program, and their purpose in pursing the HDL certificate program. The Department Chair and program Coordinator admission decision will be determined based on the probable successful completion of the Certificate courses.
Certificate Program Requirements:
The Human Development and Leadership Certificate requires the successful completion (with a GPA of 3.0) of twelve hours of graduate-level coursework to include the four courses listed below. Students may transfer up to six credit hours of similar graduate study. This program leads to a non-practice credential and is not approved by the EPSB.

Developing Human Potential Seminar (3). A course designed to familiarize students with those factors which prevent individuals from reaching their full personal, social, and professional potential. Emphasis will be on developing student ability to recognize these factors and the skills for positively effecting individual potential.

Multicultural Issues in Human Services (3). The purpose of this course is to focus on the role that cultural environment plays in the lives of people and the implications of that role for helping professions and the helping process. There will be an overview of the different microcultures to which individuals belong and implications for the delivery of services. It is expected that the student will learn how to use the concept of pluralism in the provision of services to multicultural individuals and populations.
Assessment of Human Potential (3). This course focuses on the understanding and utilization of assessments related to personal and professional growth and development.

Group Process (3) A study of the history and characteristics of group processes and structure as well as issues in leadership style and development of a model in small group interaction. (May not be used toward school counseling certification)

Nonprofit Leadership Studies (NLS) Certificate (Online)
The youth and nonprofit field is growing rapidly with the number of nonprofits now over 2,000,000. This indicates a 30% growth in the last decade alone. With this growth, and in order to meet the demands of those interested in community service and non-profit work, it is imperative that leaders in the field have an avenue for additional preparation. Leaders in the youth and nonprofit field often have degrees representing a broad spectrum of disciplines, including but not limited to psychology, sociology, business, recreation, organizational communication and others. Too few have degrees that are focused on the specific competencies necessary for success in the youth and human service field. This certificate focuses on these competencies and will strengthen leadership skills and programs addressing many community needs in the region. This certificate can be completed 100% online.
The Nonprofit Leadership Studies Certificate will be administered by the Director for Nonprofit Leadership Studies housed within the Department of Wellness and Therapeutic Sciences. Other faculty within the program will assist the Director in teaching courses, assessment, and additional tasks needed to facilitate student completion of the certificate.
Requirements for Admission:
Admission is based on applicants holding an undergraduate degree from an accredited higher education institution. Applicants must comply with the Murray State University requirements (see Graduate Admissions). Additional requirements for unconditional admission are as follows:
- unconditional admission is based on an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher;
- conditional admission for applicants with an undergraduate GPA below 3.0 requires a letter of application to the Program Director of the Nonprofit Leadership Studies Program describing the interest in the program. A student who is admitted conditionally must maintain a GPA of 3.0. Failure to do so results in academic probation or academic suspension, per University policy.

Organizational Dynamics Certificate
The Certificate in Organizational Dynamics is designed to enhance a person’s ability to lead and be effective in an organizational setting. Emphasis is placed on recognizing and responding to internal and external issues to the organization that impact productivity, reputation, and success.
The Certificate in Organizational Dynamics is administered by the Graduate Director of Organizational Communication, housed within the Department of Organizational Communication in the College of Business.
Requirements for Admission:
Students who hold an undergraduate degree or are currently enrolled in a graduate degree program may apply for the Certificate in Organizational Dynamics program. Persons who already hold a graduate degree may also apply for the Certificate program.
Applicants must comply with Murray State University requirements (see Chapter 2 of current Graduate Bulletin). For unconditional admission, an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher in the last two years of undergraduate work with at least a minor in communication, business, or related field. Telecommunications Systems Management Professional Certificate
The Graduate Certificate in Telecommunications Systems Management is designed to complement traditional, disciplinary graduate and professional degree programs. The Certificate program will provide professionals (e.g., medical administrators, corporate managers) with an overview of current terminology, practices and concepts related to the area of information technology and telecommunications systems. This Certificate program will be offered online from Murray State University.
The Graduate Certificate in Telecommunications Systems Management is administered by the Coordinator of the TSM Graduate Program. TSM graduate faculty within the TSM program will assist the Coordinator as needed in developing and reviewing program objectives, approving courses within the Certificate program and monitoring participant’s progress through the program.
Requirements for Admissions:
Students who hold an undergraduate degree or are currently enrolled in a graduate or professional degree program may apply for the TSM Certificate program. Persons who already hold a graduate degree may also apply for the Certificate program.
Applicants must comply with the Murray State University requirements (see Chapter 2 of the current Graduate Bulletin). In addition, applicants must comply with the admissions requirements for the graduate program in Telecommunication Systems Management.
TSM graduate certificate applicants will be unconditionally admitted if their undergraduate grade point average (GPA) is 3.0 or higher and they submit a Graduate Management Test (GMAT) score of at least 400 or submit a Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score of at least 800. However, if the applicant’s GPA is less than 3.0 and they submit a GMAT score that satisfies the GMAT admission formula, or they submit a GRE score that satisfies the GRE admission formula, they will be fully admitted.
GMAT formula: (200 x GPA) + (GMAT score) > 1,000
GRE formula: (200 x GPA) + GRE > 1,400
*Note: The GRE formula uses the combined score from the quantitative and verbal sections only. Ask the Educational Testing Service (ETS) to send scores directly to Murray State University using our institution code: 1494.
In addition, candidates must take the TOEFL and score at least 550 on the paper-based exam (or 213 on the computerized version) if English is not their native language or they have not graduated from an accredited English speaking university.
Applicants to the TSM graduate certificate program may be admitted conditionally if their overall GPA is 2.75 or higher, or at least 3.0 for their last 60 hours of undergraduate study. Full admission to the program will be granted in one of only two ways, namely: 1) The applicant takes TSM 601, TSM 610 and one other certificate course (TSM 602, TSM 603, or TSM 615) as their first nine hours of the program and earns a GPA not less than 3.33 from the three core course; or 2) the applicant takes the GMAT or GRE and meets the unconditional admission formula within their first semester in the program.
Applicants, from any country where English is a second language, will be required to demonstrate English language proficiency. This can be done by taking the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exam and score at least: 1) 550 pBT (paper-based test), 2) 213 cBT (computer-based test), 3) Minimum of 20 in each band iBT (internet-based test) or take the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam and score 6.0 on the academic test (with no band < 5.5) to be fully admitted into the certificate program.
The Graduate Certificate in Telecommunications Systems Management requires the completion of the 15 hours of Graduate-level coursework approved for the Certificate (below). Students may transfer up to six credit hours of equivalent graduate courses into the program.

Veterinary Hospital Management Graduate Certificate<
The Veterinary Hospital Management Certificate is designed to complement the undergraduate and graduate professional degree programs. The Certificate program’s objectives are to provide students with opportunities to expand their knowledge in Veterinary Technology, to explore the business operation of a veterinary clinic, and to experience how the combination of their academic undergraduate and certificate course work can complement their job search. The Certificate program is offered through traditional classroom work and online through Murray State University.
The Certificate in Veterinary Hospital Management is administered by the Head of the Veterinary Technology Program, housed in Carman AHT Center on College Farm Road. Faculty within the department will assist the Head in developing and reviewing the program objectives, approving courses with the Certificate program and overseeing specific student projects.
Requirements for Admission:
Students who hold an undergraduate degree in Veterinary Technology or are currently enrolled in the graduate program may apply for acceptance into the certification curriculum. Persons who already hold a graduate degree may also apply.
Applicants must comply with Murray State University Admission Requirements.
For unconditional admission, an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher is required; for conditional admission, judgment will be determined by probable success based on Graduate Record Examination scores, letter of recommendation, and/or other evidence such as a planned program of prerequisite courses.
The Veterinary Hospital Management Certificate Program requires the completion of 18 hours of graduate level coursework. Relevant independent study courses may count toward the Certificate only upon approval by the Head of the Veterinary Technology Program.
