Leadership Programs

The Leadership Programs at Murray State University are a wonderful way to meet new people, enhance your leadership skills, and get connected at the university. The programs also educate and expose students to real life issues involving leadership. The following three leadership programs are offered at Murray State University.

  • Emerging Leaders Program (ELP)
  • Leadership Murray State (LMS)
  • Youth Leadership Workshop (offered in the spring only)


Emerging Leaders Program
Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) is a semester long program designed to help freshman develop leadership skills to be a successful leader at Murray State University. We offer sessions that cover a variety of leadership topics including:

  • Getting involved on campus
  • Time Management
  • Effective Communication as a Leader
  • Leadership: What is it?
  • Goal Setting
  • Personal leadership development

These sessions are bi-weekly and are offered during the fall and spring semester. At the end of the program, students who successfully complete the program will be recognized with a certificate of completion.

Leadership Murray State

Leadership Murray State (LMS) is a semester long program designed to help highly involved upper-class Murray State students fine-tune their leadership skills and abilities. The program also introduces new concepts and ideas to the student leaders. We offer sessions that cover a variety of leadership topics including:

  • Leadership: What is it?
  • Becoming an Effective Leader
  • Vision, Mission, and Goals
  • Event Planning
  • Fundraising Strategies
  • Multiculturalism: What is it?
  • Conflict Management
  • Diversity Awareness
  • Motivation

Leadership Murray State can now be taken as a class credit. At the end of the program, students who successfully complete the program will be recognized with a certificate of completion. Youth Leadership Workshop

The Youth Leadership workshop occurs in the spring semester and brings together high school juniors from this region. These high school juniors are nominated by their high school guidance counselor to participate in the leadership workshop. The goal of the program is for students to learn valuable leadership skills they will be able to apply in their school and community. The selection guidelines include the following:

  • The student must currently be a high school junior.
  • Minimum cumulative grade point average is a 3.5.
  • The student must exhibit leadership qualities and abilities in the school and or community setting.
  • The student should attend a half-day workshop on Saturday, March 31, 2007 on our campus from 8:00-11:00 AM. The student should also attend a half-day workshop on Saturday, April 14th, 2007 from 1:00-4:00 PM on our campus

Once accepted to participate in the workshop the high school junior will also be given an opportunity to compete for a scholarship. If you have any questions about the workshop, please contact call 270-809-6953.
