Lambda Pi Eta - Rho Beta Chapter
Lambda Pi Eta is the official communication studies honor society of the
National Communication Association. Lambda Pi Eta represents what Aristotle
described in his book, Rhetoric, as the three ingredients of persuasion:
Logos (Lambda) meaning logic, Pathos (Pi) relating to emotion, and Ethos
(Eta) defined as character credibility and ethics. The Rho Beta Chapter
of Lambda Pi Eta was established at Murray State University in 2004. Dr.
Frances L. M. Smith is the faculty advisor.
PURPOSE
- Recognize, foster and reward outstanding scholastic achievement in communication studies
- Stimulate interest in the field of communication
- Promote and encourage professional development among communication majors
- Provide an opportunity to discuss and exchange ideas in the field of communication
- Establish and maintain closer relationships between faculty and students
- Explore options for graduate education in communication studies
MEMBERSHIP
To be eligible for consideration for admission, students:
- Must have completed 60 semester credit-hours;
- Have a minimum cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 for all courses taken, and have at least a 3.25 GPA for all communication studies courses;
- Must have completed the equivalent of 12 semester credit-hours in communication studies and currently be enrolled as a student in good standing;
- Display commitment to the discipline of communication;
- Exhibit high standards of personal and professional character and support the purposes of the honor society.
OFFICERS
The officers of Lambda Pi Eta shall be President, Vice President, and Secretary.
MEETINGS
Lambda Pi Eta shall meet once a month to conduct formal business, and as often as necessary to carry out projects and activities of interest to members. Organization announcements are posted on the bulletin board across from the elevator on 3rd floor Wilson Hall.
An induction ceremony is held each semester. New members are presented with a certificate of membership, a LPE lapel pin, and honor cords to wear during commencement.
AWARDS
In 2006, the National Communication Association named the Murray State chapter of Lambda Pi Eta as
Rookie Chapter of the Year - Honorable Mention
In 2005, Lambda Pi Eta was nominated for the New Student Organization of the Year Award in recognition of its leadership and commitment to campus life.
Omicron Delta Kappa named Dr. Tillson as (student organization) Advisor
of the Year (2004-2005).
