Undergraduate Programs in Organizational Communication
The Department of Organizational Communication offers programs leading
to either the Bachelor of Arts or the Bachelor of Science degree. Students
investigate how communication theory, research, and skills are applied
to create, sustain, and improve organizations. Students learn a variety
of communication-based competencies (e.g., conflict management, supervisor/subordinate
communication, intercultural communication, and public speaking) that
are necessary for both personal and organizational success.
The major in organizational communication prepares students
for a wide variety of careers that place a premium on
the role of communication in accomplishing goals and objectives.
This
major is compatible with an extraordinarily broad range
of minors (e.g., marketing, psychology, and biology)
allowing students to develop technical
competencies and professional skills customized to their
particular career goals. The department also offers
a minor in organizational communication.
DEGREE REQUIREMENTS:
- The Department of Organizational Communication requires a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 for students declaring a major or minor in the department after the first semester of the first year of undergraduate enrollment at MSU or any other institution of higher education. A 2.5 GPA must be maintained in all courses counting toward their major or minor in Organizational Communication. A student failing to maintain a 2.5 will not be permitted to take new courses in the department until the GPA reaches or exceeds 2.5. This policy became effective with publication of the 1995-97 Undergraduate Bulletin.
- The total number of credit hours earned in business courses (ACC, BPA, CIS, FIN, MGT, MKT, OSY, RES) cannot exceed 25 percent of total curriculum requirements.
- Any student enrolling in the Organizational major after his/her sophomore year may need more than two years to complete the requirements for the major.
