Cermaics
 

  Ceramics includes all the traditional approaches to clay working: throwing, hand building and sculpture, plus the study of clay, glazes, firing and kiln construction. Students are encouraged to develop their own imagery and direction as part of the overall studio experience. Second semester students have studio space available on a daily basis.This program focuses on personal expression coupled with solid knowledge of the ceramic medium. Students take responsibility for making their own clay and have free access to all equipment in the ceramic studio.

 

  Classes offered as part of the emphasis include:

  • ART 370 Introduction to Ceramics I

  • Beginning ceramics furnishes the student with basic approaches to clay working: throwing, hand building, press molding, clay extrusions plus glazing and firing ware. The class may be taken by non-majors as well as by students who are majoring in art.

  • ART 371 Ceramics II
  • A further study of formation techniques and lecture materials covering clay bodies, slips, colored engobes, firing and glazing. Prerequisite: ART 370 .

  • ART 372 Ceramics III
  • Continuation of ART 371. Students will study glaze calculation and testing as well as concentrating on their own goal-based creative work. Prerequisite: ART 371.

  • ART 471 Ceramics IV
  • Students majoring in ceramics will study kiln construction and design. In addition to subject matter instruction, students will pursue the normal work load assignments and critique session plus glazing and firing. Prerequisite: ART 372.

  • ART 472 Ceramics V
  • Continuation of ART 471. Prerequisite: ART 471.

  • ART 571 Ceramics VI
  • Concentrated exploration of selected ceramic processes with emphasis on personal expression. Prerequisite: ART 472.

  • ART 572 Ceramics VII
  • Continuation of ART 571. Prerequisite: ART 571.

 
Facilities
 

  Ceramics has 4,700 square feet studio space open 24 hours a day. This area includes individual studio spaces for students with an emphasis in the discipline.
