Low-Residency MFA in Creative Writing
We are looking for candidates who show strong promise as creative writers and who have a strong interest in literature. Additionally, we seek students who are self-motivated, able to work independently, and capable of making positive use of criticism to improve their writing.
Applicants must meet Murray State University requirements. Details about University policies regarding "Admissions and Registration" are available online. Applicants must have completed a baccalaureate degree with a major, minor, or evidence of sufficient study in literature.
Beyond these minimum university requirements, admission will depend upon the MFA admission committee's assessment of an applicant's chances for success in the program. Committee review of applications will be based on the following factors:
- Writing sample in appropriate genre (see below).
- GPA at previous undergraduate and/or graduate programs.
- Two (2) letters of recommendation.
- GRE (verbal). We encourage but do not require applicants to submit GRE scores.
- Preparation and experience as demonstrated in personal statement.
How to Apply
- Send the following items to MSU Graduate Admissions Office, 113 Sparks
Hall, Murray, KY 42071-3312:
- Completed Graduate Admission Application
- Non-refundable check or money order for $30 USD made payable to Murray State University
- Writing Sample (according to above guidelines)
- 200-300 word personal statement addressing your experience and goals as a writer.
- Have sent directly to MSU Graduate Admissions, 113 Sparks Hall, Murray,
KY 42071-3312:
- Two (2) letters of recommendation (sent directly from recommenders)
- Official transcripts from each institution attended (graduate or undergraduate) other than Murray State University. Transcripts should be mailed directly from the Registrar's Office of each institution.
- GRE General Test Scores are recommended but not required. Have Educational Testing Service submit GRE scores to Murray State University, code 1494.

Applications for admission are accepted year-round.
