Admission and Scholarships Information
 
    To apply for admission to Department of Music academic programs and to be considered for music scholarships, you are required to:

  • Submit a University Admission Application to the Admissions Office.
  • Submit a University Scholarship Application to the Scholarship Office.
  • Submit a Department of Music Admission and Scholarship Application to the Music Office.
  • Submit a Department of Music Parental Information Form to the Music Office.

    Audition Guidelines
     
        Once your applications have been processed, you will be contacted with the date of your audition. This audition will determine your admission to the Music Department, as well as your eligibility for music scholarships. Rehearsal time prior to the audition is not guaranteed.

      Accompanists will be provided for vocal auditions only. Instrumentalists may bring an accompanist, or perform unaccompanied. Instrumentalists auditioning will be judged on tone production, musicality, technical and rhythmic accuracy, intonation, scales, and sight-reading. Vocalists will be judged on tone production, musicality, rhythmic accuracy, intonation, diction, tonal memory, and sight-reading.
     
      Brass:
      Students will be asked to perform two contrasting selections from classical music repertoire, either solos or etudes; major scales through three sharps and three flats (two octaves if possible), and a two-octave chromatic scale; and sight-reading.
     
      Keyboard (Area in Music Education, or Area in Music):
      Students will be asked to perform a contrapunctal work by J.S. Bach; a classical, romantic, impressionistic, or contemporary work; all major scales, two octaves, hands together; and sight-reading.
     
      Keyboard (Area in Music Performance):
      Students will be asked to perform a contrapunctal work by J.S. Bach; a movement of a classical period sonata; a romantic, impressionistic, or contemporary work; all major scales and one form of minor, four octaves, hands together; and sight-reading. One of the selections must be performed from memory.
     
      Percussion:
      Students are asked to perform the following in at least three of the four percussion categories. 1) Snare: PAS (Pecussive Arts Society) rudiments and a solo or etude in either rudimental, marching, or concert style. 2) Timpani: tuning fourths and fifths, and a solo or etude. 3) Keyboard Percussion: major scales through three sharps and three flats (two octaves), and either a solo or etude using two or four mallets. 4) Drum set: demonstrate jazz, rock, and Latin styles. 5) Sight-reading.
     
      Strings:
      Students will be asked to perform one or two selections from classical music repertoire that is written for their instrument and is at least five minutes in length; major scales through three sharps and three flats (three octaves). An etude is optional.
     
      Vocal:
      Students will be asked to perform two songs of contrasting style from the standard art song repertoire (memorized); sight-reading; and tonal memory: sing back four to five pitch patterns. Taped accompaniments are not allowed. Singing in a foreign language is desirable, but not required.
