Information on Service Learning for Faculty

Service Learning is different from co-curricular and volunteer activities in several key areas:

  • Activities are directly related to the curriculum
  • Students reflect on service as it informs and relates to their studies
  • Service Learning is an integrated part of the course
  • Faculty may find out more about Service Learning by enrolling in workshops offered throughout the year. Watch for faculty email announcements for workshop dates. Additionally, information and guidance is available by contacting members of the Service Learning Committee.

    Membership of the Committee

Corky Broughton - Committee Chair,  Leon Bodevin, Jim Bryant,  Dwayne Driskill, Dwight Holliday, Mica Howe,  Sandra Jordan,  William Koenecke,  Martin Milkman, Michael Morgan,  Janis Murphy,  Sharon Myatt,  Bob Pervine,  Don Robertson,  Lou Tillson,  Roger Weis,

    Role of the Committee:

The committee reviews courses proposed by the faculty to assure that they meet criteria for Service Learning Designated Classes. The committee also provides information on Service Learning, advises faculty and participates in the Service Learning Training Workshops.

Faculty members who complete the Service Learning workshops are designated as Service Learning Mentors. The Service Learning Committee recommends that the faculty members who achieve the status of Service Learning Mentor receive recognition and credit in their annual evaluations for the teaching aspect and the service aspect of service learning.

Criteria for Service Learning Designated Classes:

  • Service must be directed toward an identifiable need in the community.

  • Knowledge from the discipline forms the service experiences with which the students are involved.

  • The service learning experience must relate to the subject matter of the course.

  • There must be adequate time for quality reflection on the service learning experience. This will be formative as well as summative.

  • Class members must have the opportunity to learn from each other, as well as from the instructor during the course of the experience.

  • Students must be formally evaluated on their service experience. Assessments might include tests, journals, papers or other methods.

  • The instructor must ensure that the service learning experience is a substantive part of the course and the student's evaluation.

  • In order for a course to carry the Service Learning Designation, the instructor must complete a workshop on service learning.

  • Service recipients must have an opportunity to provide feedback and engage in reflective discussion with the student and/or faculty member concerning the service provided.

  • The course will provide students with the tools they need to "make a difference" in the future.
