Dietetic Internship Program
and Master of Science Degree
The College of Health Sciences and Human Services is currently developing a combined Dietetic Internship and Master of Science program. This will be an optional program to enable the dietetic intern to complete a master’s degree following the dietetic internship program. The combined program will require the student to complete the dietetic internship program described below followed by (13) additional credit hours of graduate work. This work would be completed during the summer and fall semesters following the dietetic internship program. It is proposed that the combined internship and non-thesis master’s program will begin for the fall, 2002 class of dietetic interns.
This combined program in no way affects the current dietetic internship program. Students are encouraged to apply to the dietetic internship program now. If the combined program is approved, interns in the dietetic internship program for the 2003-2004 year will have the option of completing studies for the degree of Master of Science in Clinical Nutrition.

The Dietetic Internship Program at Murray State University
is a post baccalaureate dietetic training program offering over 900 hours
of intensive training in food service management, clinical dietetics and
community nutrition. After completing the program, a student is eligible
for active membership in The American Dietetic Association (ADA) and is
qualified to take the examination to become a Registered Dietitian (R.D.).
Accreditation
The Dietetic Internship Program has received developmental accreditation by the American Dietetic Association (ADA), 216 W. Jackson Blvd., Chicago, Il 60606. Any questions regarding accreditation may be directed to the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of the American Dietetic Association at 1-800-877-1600 or visit the web site at www.eatright.org/cade/
The mission of the Dietetic Internship Program at Murray State University is to prepare entry-level dietitians with the competencies to practice general dietetics in multidisciplinary settings to meet the present and future nutritional and food service needs of their community. The program at Murray State University assumes the responsibility for providing advanced educational opportunities in dietetics in the Western Kentucky region. The region will benefit by having competent dietetic professional serving in various health-related facilities and businesses.
Students begin the internship when the MSU Fall semester
begins in August. Interns are enrolled as full-time graduate students at
Murray State University. After a one-week orientation to the internship
program on Murray State University campus, students begin the supervised
practice at the internship site. Each intern is assigned to one of
the ten supervised practice facilities in Kentucky and Tennessee. Practice
sites and locations are as follows:
Healthcare Institution Location
Interns complete supervised experiences in nutrition
therapy, foodservice management, community nutrition and business development.
A culminating experience allows the student to select their area of interest
for nutrition practice as they complete the spring experience. Preceptors
in each healthcare institution oversee the experience and provide general
management and mentorship. Murray State University Clinical Instructor
Lori
Crouch, R.D., L.D., assists students with project development,
scheduling of experiences outside of the primary training site, and providing
general guidance and direction in meeting curriculum requirements. The
Clinical Instructor meets with students at their training sites throughout
the course of the internship program.

The supervised practice continues through the spring semester, spanning 30 weeks in total for the fall and spring semesters. Interns participate in the supervised practice at the assigned internship sites approximately 32 hours per week.
Intern training facilities include a fully-equipped,
Internet-connected computer laboratory.
