Financial Aid
|
|
Every year, millions of dollars
are given to college students to assist them with the expenses of higher
education. Financial aid falls into four general categories: scholarships,
grants, loans, and college work study. Generally speaking, scholarships
and grants do not have to be repaid, loans do (with interest). College
work study is a program which provides jobs for students at the college
(or university) they attend.
Scholarships - are
generally awarded to students who show achievement in a particular area
- academics, sports, music, etc. Some scholarships are even available
for students who graduated from a particular high school, or whose parents
work for a specific company. Many scholarships are available through
the Murray State University
Scholarship Office, but scholarships are also available through
private organizations and companies outside of MSU. Below are links
to some web sites where you can search for scholarships for which you may
be qualified .
-
To apply for MSU scholarships, you complete an application
each year; the deadline is February 1.
-
To apply for scholarships available outside of MSU,
you must meet the requirements and deadline set forth by each scholarship
applied for.
-
Spend
time searching through the scholarship web sites and also apply for MSU
scholarships. You'll never receive a scholarship if you don't
put forth the effort and apply!
Grants - are
awarded to students who have a financial need. Grants are awarded
by both the federal and state government. The Pell Grant is the most
widely known federal grant but the SEOG grant is also available for the
financially neediest students. The state of Kentucky awards two grants
- the CAP Grant for students attending public colleges and universities,
and the KTG Grant for students attending private institutions.
-
To apply for grants, complete the Free Application
for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each year.
We strongly encourage you
to apply no later than March 1 each year.
Loans - must
be repaid with interest. A variety of loan programs are available
for both students and parents of students. All offer special terms
so that the student can attend school without having to make payments while
attending classes. To qualify for these special loan programs, you
must complete the FAFSA. For more information about specific loan
programs you may contact the Financial
Aid Office
Work Study - jobs are part-time
jobs for students with a financial need. Jobs are available in a
wide variety of settings and work hours are tailored to meet your class
schedule. For more information contact the Financial Aid Office.
