Frequently Asked Questions:

Why is Food Services becoming Dining Services?

Toward the end of the spring semester 2009, Food Services began its transition to Dining Services (to be fully in effect by fall 2009). The change was made to create a more accurate reflection of what we do. Unlike a grocery store where you can pick up a hunk of meat and sack of potatoes, we don't just offer food. We offer dining - an environment where you can meet your friends, share a meal or snack, talk over the problems of the day or joys of the moment. Dining Services takes the work out of breakfast, lunch and dinner so you can concentrate on the whole reason any of us are even here - education.

How do I select a meal plan?

New freshmen and transfer students: A form and more information will be provided to you during your Summer O. If you miss or did not attend Summer O, you may make your selection through the Money tab on myGate.

All other students: Select your meal plan through the Money tab on myGate. If you have any questions, please call the RacerCard Office at 270-809-3003 or e-mail racercard@murraystate.edu.

How does the meal plan work?
Your meal plan is accessed with your RacerCard.  To make a dining purchase, all you need to do is swipe the card.
Meals on 180 & 240 Plans: These meal-only plans may use one meal per meal period - breakfast, lunch, dinner - at Winslow Dining Hall and are eligible for meal exchange*.  Residents of White, Regents and all upperclassmen may use their meal-only plan at the Thoroughbred Room.
Meals on 125/300 & 175/400 Plans: The meals can only be used at Winslow Dining and are not eligable for meal exchange*, but there are no limitations on how many meals may be used per meal period. For example, you may eat twice within the lunch period or you may use more than one meal at a time for occasions when you'd like to treat friends and family at Winslow.

Flex Dollars can be used like cash at any dining location on campus and are not subject to Kentucky sales tax. Six percent savings on everything!

*Meal Exchange is using an allotted meal on a meal-only plan to make a retail dining purchase on campus. Only one meal may be used per meal period - breakfast, lunch, dinner.  Exchange rates are posted at the venues.

What meal plan do I have to purchase? Are meal plans required?

Purchase the meal plan that best fits your needs. Freshmen and sophomores living in the residential colleges are required to have a residential meal plan. Freshmen and sophomore choices include the 125/300, 180 or larger plans.

Juniors who receive the regional tuition discount are required to have either a meal plan or a housing contract. If you are a junior receiving the discount, you are required to have a Copper or larger meal plan if you are not living on campus. If you are living on campus, you may choose any meal plan, but are not required to do so.

Juniors not receiving the regional tuition discount, all seniors and commuters (of any classification) may choose from any plan - commuter or residential - but are not required to purchase a meal plan.

Which meal plans are the best picks?

Best Reliability: The 240 Plan, at an average of 15 meals per week, is set up to make certain you won’t go hungry before finals.  The meals can only be used once a meal period (breakfast, lunch, and dinner - brunch and dinner on the weekend).

Best Flexibility: The 125/300 and 175/400 plans offer you the flexibility to eat when, where and as often as you like.  Meals, to be used at Winslow only, have no limitations.  Eat as often as you like or even treat friends and family to meals on your plan.  Flex Dollars are accepted at all dining locations on campus. In the rare case you run out of meals, you can use your Flex Dollars at Winslow at a discounted rate, or call the RacerCard Office to purchase more meals at $5 a pop.  Also, Flex Dollars are tax-free, meaning you save 6 percent at all dining locations on campus.

What if I want to change my meal plan?

Changes may only be made during the first month of the semester. You may change your meal plan through the Money tab on myGate. Please allow a few days for processing. You may also visit the RacerCard Office on the first floor of the Curris Center or call 270-809-3579. Your account balance may be adjusted to reflect any meals/Flex Dollars spent before the change.

If you are having difficulty with the use of your plan or have purchased a plan that now seems too big for your purchasing habits, please contact Director Richard Fritz in the Dining Services Office to see what options may be available.

What if I run out of meals?

Additional meals can be purchased in any quantity from the RacerCard Office on the first floor of the Curris Center. You must have less than 20 meals left on your plan before you are eligable to purchase additional meals. Additional purchased meals do not carry over to the next semester. Meals cannot be added to the Bronze, Silver, Gold, Copper, and Platinum meal plans. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to e-mail racercard@murraystate.edu.

What if I run out of Flex Dollars?

Additional Flex Dollars can be purchased in $25 increments from the Racercard Office on the first floor of the Curris Center. Additional purchased Flex Dollars do not carry over to the next semester. Flex Dollars cannot be added to the 180 and 240 meal plans. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to e-mail racercard@murraystate.edu.

How can I check my account balance?

Check your account balance by asking any Dining Services cashier for an inquiry. Meals and Flex Dollars do not roll over to the next semester. Any unused meals or Flex Dollars will be forfeited.

What is declining balance?

Declining balance is like a debit account accessed by your RacerCard. The dollars in declining balance may be spent like cash in any Dining Services location, the Bookstore, and Copy Express - all conveniently located on campus.  Money remaining in your declining balance account will carry over from one semester to the next.  Additional declining balance dollars may be added in any amount at the Cashier’s Office, on the second floor of Sparks Hall, or by calling the Cashier’s Office with a credit card.  Checks and cash are accepted inside at the Racer Card office, and checks are welcome in the drop box on the first floor of the Curris Center outside the Dining Services Office.  You may also add declining balance on RacerPay.

Anyone is eligible for declining balance and there is no minimum deposit to open an account.  Freshmen and sophomores must have a meal plan before they can add declining balance.  To obtain the amount of funds left on your declining balance you may ask a cashier to check for you in any location where Declining Balance is accepted or come by Racer Card Office.  REFUNDS ARE ONLY AVAILABLE DURING THE LAST TWO WEEKS OF THE SEMESTER OR WHEN THE STUDENT LEAVES THE UNIVERSITY AS LONG AS THE ENDING BALANCE IS $10 OR MORE

Does Dining Services accept debit cards?

Yes, but the transaction must be run as credit. No entering a PIN, no cash back. The reason we do not run “debit” transactions is that banks process them immediately, making it impossible to correct any possible mistakes or needed voids.

All campus dining venues will accept meal plans/meal exchange, Flex Dollars, declining balance, cash, check, credit and debit. Since there are no summer session meal plans, meal plans/meal exhange and Flex Dollars are not available during the summer.

All transactions are for the amount of sale only. Dining Serices cannot give cash back for check, credit or debit purchases. We cannot cash checks.

Report your card lost immediately to protect any balance remaining on your card. Please continue reading here for full details on what to do for a lost card.

Winslow will allow you to eat up to 2 meals (4 for the weekend) after you report a lost card. If you find your card within that time, you may reactivate it at the RacerCard office at no charge.
