Welcome to Murray State University’s Office of Financial Aid/Scholarship! As you are either considering Murray State University as your college choice or are already a part of the Murray State Racer family, we hope we can be of service to you throughout your academic endeavors. There are many ways for students to get financial assistance to help pay for college. In the Office of Financial Aid/Scholarship, we work with federal, state, and university programs such as scholarships, grants, loans, and work-study.

Financial Aid Updates

Verification
- If you are selected for verification for the 2012-2013 award year, you must provide the appropriate documentation for our office to continue your request for federal financial aid. Requested items will vary per student. Please access your myGate for exact documents that must be sent (via email, mail, or fax) to our office in a timely manner.
- Please note an important change for the 2012-2013 award year. A copy of your Federal Tax Return is no longer acceptable. You must provide a full IRS Tax Transcript. This request should be directed to the IRS at 800-829-1040 or irs.gov. The full transcript will include all schedules and W2 Forms.
January 1st
- Students are able to begin submitting the 2012-2013 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Please make sure you use the federal website: fafsa.gov.
- To sign the FAFSA electronically, a Personal Identification Number (PIN) is required for you and your parents, if you are a dependent student. The PIN may be obtained at pin.ed.gov.
- Families are strongly encouraged to use IRS Data Retrieval process to import the tax return data into the FAFSA.
- If your taxes have not been filed at the time you are completing the FAFSA, you may use estimated figures, i.e., last pay stub for the calendar year 2011 or the actual 2010 Federal Tax Return. Once your 2011 Federal Tax Return has been filed, you must update your FAFSA with the appropriate data. You are able to use the IRS Data Retrieval option to enter the updated data.
- The FAFSA should be filed as soon after January 1st as possible. If you are a resident of Kentucky, the College Access Program (CAP) Grant has limited funding available. The grant will be awarded to eligible students until funds are exhausted.
Repeated Courses
- Federal regulations will no longer allow a student to receive financial aid assistance if they are repeating a course that was previously passed. The course may have been taken at Murray State University or transferred as an acceptable course from another institution.
- Your enrollment in repeat coursework will be used to determine your enrollment classification as full time, three quarter time, half time, or less than half time.
Graduate Students
- Beginning July 1, 2012, Graduate students are no longer eligible to receive Federal Direct Subsidized Loan(s). The loan program has been eliminated for Graduate students. However, Graduate students will remain eligible to receive the Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan or the Federal Direct Graduate PLUS Loan.
Federal Pell Grant Receipients
- Effective 2012-2013 academic year, Federal Pell Grant recipients will only have eligibility to receive funding for a total of 12 semesters.
