In order to graduate with Honors, students must have a grade point average of 3.20/4.00 and complete the Honors sequence as listed: HON 099 Freshman Orientation for Honors Students (1 credit hour) This course is required for incoming students who have not declared a major. Students who have declared a major should enroll in the departmental orientation class designed for the declared major. ENG 104 Honors Composition and Research (3 credit hours) ENG 104 completes the university composition requirement but must be supplemented with three credit hours earned by examination or placement credit for ENG 101. An enrolled student with a minimum enhanced English ACT score of 27 will be considered for three credit hours for ENG 101 if they write an essay to be assessed by the Department of English and apply for the credit through the departmental challenge procedure. (Contact the Murray State University Department of English for additional information.) ENG 204 or ENG 404 may be substituted for ENG 104 with the permission of the Honors Program director. HON 151 Honors Seminar in Social Science I (3 credit hours) This course should be taken during the fall semester of the first year and fulfills the World Civilization university studies requirement. HON 152 Honors Seminar in Social Science II (3 credit hours) This course should be taken during the spring semester of the first year and fulfills the World Civilization university studies requirement. (Prerequisite: HON 151) HON 165 Honors Seminar in Communication (3 credit hours) An exploration of interpersonal communication and public address skills necessary for personal and professional success. Open only to students in the Honors Program. A University Studies communication and basic skills elective. A student cannot have credit for this course and COM 161 or COM 181. HON 251 Honors Seminar in Literature and Philosophy I (3 credit hours) This course fulfills the humanities university studies requirement. HON 252 Honors Seminar in Literature and Philosophy II (3 credit hours) This course is a continuation of HON 251 and fulfills the humanities university studies requirement. (Prerequisite: HON 251) HON 261 Honors Seminar in Science (3 credit hours) An exploration of readings and discussion of various topics in the history and philosophy of science. Prerequisites: four hours of lab sciences to be approved by the Honors Program Director. HON 351 Honors Seminar in International Affairs (2 credit hours) An examination of selected international issues and problems with particular reference to international affairs. Honors students must choose two fine arts electives from HON 161, 162, 163, or 164: HON 161 Honors Seminar in Visual Arts (3 credit hours) An exploration of the visual arts in human culture. This course fulfills one of the university studies fine arts electives. HON 162 Honors Seminar in Music (3 credit hours) An exploration of the importance of music in western culture. (See above notes for HON 161.) HON 163 Honors Seminar in Theatre (3 credit hours) An exploration of the importance of theatre in western culture. (See above notes for HON 161.) HON 164 Honors Seminar in Fine Arts Abroad (3 credit hours) This course is offered in study abroad programs only. Must be taken in a foreign county. Course may be taken in different countries and may count as two different courses. (See above notes for HON 161.)
Competency in a Foreign Language
The student must have credit for a twelve-hour sequence (excluding 105) in one foreign language. Example: SPA 101, SPA 102, SPA 201, SPA 202
Competency in Mathematics
The student must complete three hours of mathematics chosen from the University Studies mathematics category. Note: Meeting the competencies in mathematics and foreign languages through Murray State courses or challenge exams will provide 7-15 hours of University Studies credit.
Student must participate in a year, semester, or summer study abroad program. Courses taken abroad may be used towards University Studies requirements, language competency, major, or minor. Students traveling with KIIS, IIS, or CCSA will receive 3-15 credits from courses taken abroad. See your international advisor regarding class schedule. (Students traveling with campus study abroad groups may not receive credit for HON 355.) —OR— HON 355 Honors Independent Study Abroad Course (3 hours) When the student cannot participate with the campus study abroad programs, the student may develop an individualized study abroad plan. Enrollment in this course must be approved by the Honors Program Director and the student’s department chair. For enrollment forms, visit the Honors Program office. (Only students studying abroad on an individual basis will receive credit for this course.)

Senior Honors Thesis (3 hours)
The senior honors thesis program may take any of the following forms, depending on the discipline in which it is undertaken: A field project with appropriate written reports; or an exhibit or performance with appropriate written documentation; a paper reflecting serious research; or a creative investigation. Students select an advisor from their major area of discipline and work with the professor to complete a senior thesis. Students are encouraged to use their imagination in completing this project. The project should be completed two weeks before Commencement. For information on the steps to begin a senior honors thesis project, contact the Honors Program office or refer to the Honors Program Student Handbook.
Please note:
Honors Program students must successfully complete at least one Honors seminar each semester. Honors Program students are not required to complete the University Studies requirements, but are required to complete the Honors Seminar sequence, the prerequisites for HON 261 and the courses required within their major discipline.
