Cole Nursing Scholarship at MSU

Recipients of the Dr. Ruth E. Cole Honorary Nursing Scholarship at Murray State University know the significance of the award and the name it holds. Dr. Ruth E. Cole, former professor and chair of nursing at MSU, led the establishment and growth of the Murray State Department of Nursing from its earliest beginnings. The Honor Society of the MSU Department of Nursing established the scholarship in 1977 to honor Cole for her distinguished service to Murray State and the Murray and Calloway County community.

A native of Calloway County, Cole was active in nursing and health professional organizations, at the national, state and local levels. She became a Red Cross nurse while a student in the school of nursing at St. Joseph’s and continued to serve the Red Cross in many capacities. She taught classes in home health nursing to both community and college students, and for many years served as a member of the board of directors of the Calloway County chapter of the American Red Cross.

In addition to developing the four-year nursing program at Murray, Cole worked tirelessly to bring many needed services to Murray and Calloway County. She was among the individuals who developed classes for the mentally disabled and helped establish Friends of the Library, serving as the first president of the group.

Today Cole is involved with a number of organizations including the Calloway County Genealogical Society where she serves as historian. She is currently writing a compilation of early Calloway County stories. She continues to serve as a member of the Murray Calloway County Hospital Hospice Advisory Council and attends meetings of Delta Kappa Gamma and the Retired Teachers Association.
