Overview

Belize is a small nation on the eastern coast of Central America, on the Caribbean Sea bordered by Mexico to the northwest and Guatemala to the west and south. The only English-speaking country in Central America, Belize was a British colony for more than a century and was known as British Honduras until 1973. It became an independent national in 1981 and its population is multicultural, with an ethnic mix of Creole, Mestizo, Maya, Garfuna, Eastern Indian, Chinese, and European.

Belize is an adventurer's paradise where Mayan temples tower above rainforest canopies while an incredibly colorful array of marine wildlife find protection in Belize's Great Barrier Reef. Corozal is the northernmost district of Belize, located approximately 20 miles south of the Mexican border. Corozal is a quiet, peaceful place located near the sea.

Students will gain teaching experience by assisting a Belizean teacher in a classroom setting four days a week, allowing for ample free time to explore the cultural and natural wonders of Belize.

Academic program

EDU 423 International Teaching Experience
Participants will complete the mandatory 12 weeks of student teaching in Kentucky as well as their portfolio requirements to meet the teacher education guidelines prior to the start of this 4-week program, which will conclude just before graduation. All participants will enroll in a three-credit course while in Belize, EDU 423 International Teaching Experience. This course will provide an international experience for prospective teachers through which they will come to understand the impact of culture and colonization on education of diverse races. Participants will be placed in a Belizean class setting to assist a local teacher. Each placement is different in Belize, with new and varying expectations. Just as your student teaching placements require negotiation stateside, so do they in Belize. The on-site Program Coordinator, Marga Lopez, is a teacher in the Belizean school system and serves as the placement coordinator as well as a great resource for program participants as they are adjusting to the Belizean school system.
