Overview

Szent István Egyetem (Saint Stephen University SZIU)
Szent István Egyetem (Saint Stephen University SZIU) is one of Hungary's largest higher education and research institutions. Split between Gödöllő and Budapest, the university comprises six academic colleges and serves approximately 15,000 students annually. Since Hungary's accession to the European Union, its programs are in higher demand, especially in biotechnology, environmental sciences, plant production, animal husbandry, horticulture, soil sciences, architecture, and teacher training.

More than 40% of all Hungarian students majoring in agriculture pursue their studies at SZIU. Szent István's mission is to fulfill the special needs of rural areas in Hungary. The university is primarily engaged in assisting their rapid progress by playing a leading role in the country's relevant research and development projects.

SZIU offers a range of academic programs in English and requires its native students to show evidence of English fluency prior to graduation.

Tessedik Samuel Foiskola or Tessedik Samuel College (TSF)
Tessedik Samuel Foiskola or Tessedik Samuel College (TSF), is a three campus institution of higher education located in Bekes County on southern edge of the Great Hungarian Plain. TSF represents the old and the new with its school of agriculture tracing its lineage back more than 125 years while its business school and education programs were started in the late 1980s. The three campuses, located in Bekescsaba, Gyula, and Szarvas, offer distinct study experiences. TSF-Bekescsaba features a modern facility in a school with less than 1,000 students and small classes. Bekescsaba is a city of 70,000 centered around a central business district with plenty to entertain and involve students during free time. TSF-Gyula offers 300 students subjects on health care and has a close relationship with the city hospital. Located 15 kilometers from Bekescsaba, Gyula is known as a spa-town that attracts visitors from all over Europe. TSF-Szarvas is located 50 kilometers from Bekescsaba nestled on the banks of the Koros river. Two-hundred and fifty students study education and agriculture at the Szarvas site.

Travel

Students may fly with other program participants or on their own to the host. All participants can arrange to be met by a program representative upon arrival and taken to their accommodations. Since both SZIU and TSF are semester or year programs, students should find that they have ample time on weekends and during breaks for independent excursions. During this time students may travel within the country or outside to neighboring European countries which are easily accessible by train or air. The rail system is extensive throughout Europe and remains the primary form of transportation between cities. Students are encouraged to investigate rail pass options prior to departure from the U.S. as EurRail passes cannot be purchased once in Europe.

Students studying at SZIU will be housed in either Budapest or Gödöllo. For either, the university campus and local attractions are all within easy traveling distance. The SZIU Gödöllo campus is also easily accessible by train from Budapest.
