From the chair
Dear Alumni and Friends,
Let me begin by thanking all of you for participating in the department Phonathon this year. Budgets are tight, as usual, at Murray State, and your generous contributions help us fund scholarships, student and faculty travel to professional meetings, technology upgrades in the classrooms, and so many more necessities.
Although I've been on the faculty in the Department of Journalism and Mass Communications since 1988, in my one semester as interim chair I've gained a new appreciation for the faculty's expertise, dedication, and sincere effort to create a quality learning environment. The continuing success of our graduates is the reward.
I am happy to report our relationship with the administration and our colleagues in the College of Business and Public Affairs has never been better. I recently returned from a recruiting trip to Louisville and Lexington. In addition to talking to high school students involved in journalism and electronic media, I was able to tell those interested in business careers about our superior programs in advertising and public relations. We are a good fit and a valuable component of the College.
We face two challenges in the near future, and would like your help with both. In 2009, we reaffirm our ACEJMC accreditation. In preparation for that event, we plan to survey our alumni to learn how effective and useful your education has been. Dr. Roger Haney will be sending out questionnaires early next year. Please take the time to fill one out and mail it back.
The second challenge comes from the Council on Postsecondary Education in Frankfort. By the year 2020, all Kentucky universities must double the number of their graduates. This is a demanding goal, but "no hill for a climber" as my grandfather liked to say. Again, you can help by spreading the word about the quality programs in Advertising, Electronic Media, Journalism, and Public Relations at Murray State to any kids that you know who are headed for college and their parents.
Again, thank you so much for your support, now and in the future.
Bob Lochte
