| STEP 9: EDUCATIONAL, ENTERTAINMENT, FREEWARE AND SHAREWARE, UTILITIES, UNZIPPING PROGRAM | ||

| EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS | ||
| There are thousands of educational programs available for almost any content area you teach. The information can be presented in a unique way using multimedia formats including sound, video and animation. This can be a very informative and entertaining way to learn and incorporates the Multiple Intelligence theories in the presentation process. Programs are available for every age group and learning style. Programs designed for high school and junior high are useful to the adult learner who did not do well in a given content area. Using a virtual environment with the returning student allows learning remedial content to occur without embarrassment. Thus empowering the student to move forward in the education process. There are also Internet sites specifically designed for the students like http://studentcenter.infomall.org/ | ||

FREEWARE AND SHAREWARE |
| Programs available for downloading on the Internet come in two categories, freeware and shareware. Freeware is exactly what it sounds like, free to download and use. Shareware are programs that are available, usually with a free trial period, that the company or author who developed them cannot afford, or does not wish to go through the process of making them available commercially. You reimburse them for their work by paying a nominal fee. This fee is usually very small compared to purchasing a similar type of program at a computer store. | ||

| UTILITIES | ||
| Utilities are a type of software program that is designed to make using your computer easier. Among other functions, utilities programs can identify and fix problems, such as recovering files that have been accidentally deleted; diagnosing and repairing damaged disks, and restoring a crashed diskette. Well-known utilities include Norton Utilities and PC Tools. Compression and Unzipping Programs are also examples of utilities software. | ||

| UNZIPPING PROGRAM | ||
| Most files downloaded from the Net come in a compressed format, so having a good unzipping utility is essential. Your Internet Service Provider sometimes includes an unzipping program, but they dont always support all formats of compressed files. If you have come across a file that cant be opened or read, it might be a compressed or zipped file that your provider or Commercial Information Service does not support with their particular unzipping program.
www.aladdinsys.com/expander/expander_win_login.html provides a free unzipping utility available for download that supports most formats of compressed files. They also provide a utility for compressing files of your own but it is shareware. Compressing files of your own is useful if you wish to save them to a floppy disk. Files take up less room after compression. You may also compress files on your hard drive to save room, but they will not work until unzipped again, so only compress files or programs you do not use very often.
