Faculty

The primary resource in Murray State graduate programs is the teaching faculty. The graduate faculty of the College of Business and Public Affairs give a high priority to excellence in teaching and research activities in support of teaching. Since 1967, the faculty have published in the college's professional journal, Journal of Business and Public Affairs, and in many other national and international professional and scholarly journals.

Our faculty have strong experiences in teaching International students from all over the world. Arthur J. Bauernfeind MBA Faculty

Distinguished Professor, Center for International Business Education Director, and

Course Taught: ECO 660 - International Business and Finance


Dr. McCoy received his B.A. in Economics in 1978 from Xavier University and his Ph.D. in International Economics and Economic Development in 1986 from the University of North Carolina. He has presented and published numerous papers involving economic impact statements, international firm location decisions, and economic education issues, in both national and international journals. Dr. McCoy has also directed and worked on several state and federal grants. He has been both a Murray State Presidential Research Fellow and recipient of the Murray State Board of Regents Award for Teaching Excellence.

In addition to “Distinguished Professor,” Dr. McCoy has served in several other administrative roles at Murray State University. He is currently the Director of the Center for International Business Education, the Executive Director of the Bureau of Business and Economic Research, the Academic Director of the Telecommunications Systems Management Program in the College of Business and Public Affairs, and the Executive Director of the On-line Business and Telecommunications Systems Management Programs.

Dr. McCoy’s international experience includes teaching International Trade and Finance, International Business, Economic Development, and International Economic Relations on the undergraduate as well as graduate level in a variety of countries including Belize, Finland, Jamaica (as a Fulbright Scholar), Austria, Hong Kong, Australia, Poland and Cyprus.

Professor Emeritus of Computer Science

Course Taught: CIS 653 - Management Science for Managerial Decision Making


Dr. Eldredge received his M.S. and Ph.D. in Operations Research from Ohio State University in 1968, and his B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from Iowa State University in 1958. He worked as a Defense Systems Engineer and a Manager of Operations Research and Management Science for several companies. His teaching experience started in 1969 when he taught in University of Evansville School of Business and he has taught in area of Management Development, Management Science and Business Statistics. He has published several publications and participated on professional conferences on Computer Simulation and Gaming for Business and Industry and Management Science Educational Issues. He also has consulting experience on Management Science Applications for Managerial Decision Making.

Course Taught: FIN 602 - Corporate Finance


Dr. Guin received his Doctorate of Business Administration (DBA) from Mississippi State University in 1979 and received the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation in 1984. He has published papers in a variety of journals in addition to a textbook and a case book. Through MSU's Small Business Development Center, Dr. Guin has assisted over 70 businesses in the Midwest region in gaining needed financing and in solving a variety of financial problems. He also has provided testimony as an expert witness in court cases in Kentucky and Tennessee. In 1992, he received the Board of Regents Award for Teaching Excellence.

Course Taught: MKT 667 - Marketing Planning and Application


Dr. Holmes received his Ph.D. in Marketing from University of Cincinnati in 1997, Master of Business Administration in Information Systems from University of Kentucky in 1984 and Bachelor of Science of Business Administration in Marketing from University of Louisville in 1982. He recently had some research that he presented on professional conferences. Dr. Holmes' worked in the private sector as a corporate trainer and business owner from 1985 to 1992. His main research and teaching interests are in business relationships and communication issues in channels of distribution. He believes the increasing presence of all forms of electronic commerce within marketing channels will allow researchers to test the robustness of current business relationship paradigms.

Dr. Bonnie L. McNeely is an Associate Professor of Business Management. She earned her doctoral degree in 1991 in the area of Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management from the University of South Carolina. Dr. McNeely has been teaching for seventeen years at Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky. She also has been certified in management.

Dr. McNeely’s primary teaching areas are Principles of Management, Organizational Behavior and International Management. She has published in the Journal of Applied Psychology and her teaching strategy articles appear in the Journal of Management Education and The Organizational Behavior Teaching Review.

She has taught in England, Germany and Austria and travels with students to Europe on the International Business Seminar Program.

Dr. Milkman received his Ph.D. in 1989 from the University of Oregon and his B.A. in 1982 from Brandeis University. Dr. Milkman has published papers in a variety of journals. He has also received numerous grants and contracts for research and development activities in the areas of education, labor relations, and regional economic development. In 1998, Dr. Milkman received the Board of Regents Award for Teaching Excellence.

Dr. Miller received his Ph.D. in 1978 from Temple University and his B.A. in 1971 from Centenary College of Louisiana. He has taught, published and made professional presentations on the topics of global marketing, marketing education, information technology applications in marketing, and the development of Web-based courses. He currently teaches traditional and Web-based courses covering information technology, eCommerce and business geographics applications in marketing and telecommunication systems management settings.

Assistant Professor of Accounting

Course Taught: ACC 604 - Quantitative Financial Controls


Dr. Wayne Tervo, Assistant Professor of Accounting, came to Murray State University in 2006. He received a Ph.D. (with a concentration in Accounting) from The University of Texas at San Antonio. Dr. Tervo currently teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in cost and managerial accounting. He is a Certified Public Accountant with practical industry and public accounting experience. Though he has not played in some time, he enjoys ice and roller hockey, running, playing with his two dogs, and spending time with his wife Donna (also an accountant).

Course Taught: MGT 656 - Seminar in Strategic Management


Dr. Schoenfeldt received his Ph.D. in 1978 from the University of Arkansas, his M.B.A from Murray State University in 1968 and his B.B.A. from Washburn University in 1958. Dr. Schoenfeldt has published in a variety of management, supervisory, business, accounting and health care journals. He has also been an active participant in numerous management development programs and consulting activities for both national and international organizations. Dr. Schoenfeldt has also been involved in teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses in Murray State's International Programs located in Germany, England, France, and Hong Kong. He was awarded international fellowships to study Japanese Culture at the Japan Studies Institute at San Diego State University (1988) and International Business at the Graduate School of Business Groupe ECS, Grenoble, France (1992). Dr. Schoenfeldt received the Outstanding Teacher Recognition Award by the College of Business and Public Affairs, Murray State University in 1991.

Department Chair and Associate Professor of Organizational Communication

Course Taught: COM 645 - Foundations in Organizational Communication


Dr. Cox serves as the Chair of Organizational Communication. He received his Ph.D. in Communication from the University of Missouri in 1996 specializing in Organizational Communication. Both his B.A. in Corporate & Organizational Communication (1989) and M.A. in Communication (1990) were earned at Western Kentucky University. Dr. Cox primarily teaches Advanced Organizational Communication, Foundations of Organizational Communication, and Seminar in Organizational Communication (topics: managerial communication and customer service/relations) at the graduate level. He has also taught graduate courses in research methods, interpersonal communication, and intercultural communication while at MSU.

Dr. Cox’s primary research agenda has investigated the communication processes of employee turnover, but he has also researched basic courses and communication administration. His recent research has also investigated employee innovation, relationship termination, and the effects of family communication on health outcomes. His research has won “Top Paper” awards at communication conferences and has appeared in international, regional, and state journals, including Management Communication Quarterly and Southern Communication Journal.

Regents Professor of Organizational Communication

Course Taught: COM 672 - Communication in Instructional Environments


Dr. Booth has a Ph.D. in communication from Purdue University. He has presented papers and published his work which focuses on communication education.

Dr. Booth is currently a Regents Professor in the Department of Organizational Communication. Dr. Booth has served as Director of the Teaching and Media Resource Center and Chair of the Department of Speech and Theatre prior to becoming a Regents Professor. He served as Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs for sixteen years. Twice during this period he served as Acting President of the University.

Dr. Booth has conducted workshops and served on several national task forces focusing on communication competencies and assessment. He spent the summer of 1996 studying and traveling in Japan as a Fulbright Fellow sponsored by the International Education Administrators group. Dr. Booth has traveled extensively, most recently to Thailand.

Graduate Director and Associate Professor of Organizational Communication

Course Taught: COM 681 - Seminar in Conflict Resolution


Dr. Brewer received his B.A. in Business Administration from Maryville College in 1982, his MDiv. in Christian Education from Southern Seminary in 1988, and his Ph.D. in Interpersonal communication from Bowling Green State University in 1995. He worked in banking, sales, and church administration before beginning his teaching career. Currently, he is the graduate director for the department of Organizational Communication. He has published papers in a variety of journals as well as a book chapter and several case studies. His primary research interests are in relationship of personality to effective communication, time and probability issues in organizational and interpersonal communication, organizational culture, and free speech issues.

Assistant Professor of Educational Administration

Courses Taught: ADM 650 - Clinical Supervision; ADM 669 - Seminar in School Administration


Dr. Flynn Received his B.S. in Science in 1959 from Indiana State University. He received his M.A. in School Administration from the University of Notre Dame in 1967 and his Ed.D. in School Administration from Ball State University in 1975. While completing these degrees, Dr. Flynn directed the People-To-People High School Ambassador Program to Europe. In addition, he wrote and published ten educational films based on the lives of children in foreign countries. During this same period of time, Dr. Flynn was the Regional Director for the National Right-To-Read program with responsibilities for the Northwest Region of the United States.

Beginning in 1975, Dr. Flynn served as the superintendent of public schools in three major school districts for a total of 25 years service. From 1975-1981, he was superintendent of schools in West Carrollton, OH; 1981-1990 superintendent in Wilmington, NC; and superintendent of schools in Beaufort County South Carolina from 1990 to 1997.

In addition to the above mentioned early experiences in International Education, Dr. Flynn was the Co-Director of the Oxford International Round Table at Oxford University in Oxford, England from 1997 to 2004. He co-directed seminars for higher education personnel, public school administrators, and public school policy makers from the United States and Canada. These seminars were held in Oxford, England and Beijing, China.

Assistant Professor of Organizational Communication

Course Taught: COM 690 - Research Methods in Organizational Communication / COM 692 - Research Practice


Dr. Gesler was born and raised in southern California. He earned his bachelor's degree in Rhetoric and Communication from the University of California, Davis where he also played on the football team as an offensive lineman. He earned his Master's degree in Organizational Communication from Murray State and his PhD from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in Communication Studies, with a secondary emphasis in Statistics. Dr. Gesler's research interests include organizational communication, research and statiscal methods, communication and leadership, communication and ethics, and communication competence.

Professor of Organizational Communication

Course Taught: COM 685 - Seminar in Organizational Communication


Dr. Tillson received her B.A. in Education (Oral Communication and English) from Glenville State College in 1984, her M.A. in Communication Studies from West Virginia University in 1987, and her Ph.D. in Organizational Communication from The Ohio University in 1992.

She has presented and published numerous papers on communication apprehension, communication pedagogy, assessment practices, and teaching assistant development. Dr. Tillson has directed honors and graduate theses, and more than 400 senior seminar research papers, five of which have been published and/or presented at national conferences. She has received numerous teaching awards including the Murray State University Board of Regents Award for Teaching Excellence, the Kentucky Communication Association Excellence in the Art of Teaching Award (3 times), and the MSU Student Support Services Fabulous Faculty Award.

Dr. Tillson’s primary areas of academic interest are Assessment and Communication (Senior Capstone), Health Communication, Organizational Communication, Instructional/Educational Communication, and Service Learning and Communication. Former administrative roles at Murray State University include Assistant Dean of the College of Humanities and Fine Arts and Basic Course Director for the Department of Speech Communication and Theatre.

Associate Provost and Associate Professor of Organizational Communication

Course Taught: COM 585 - Advanced Organizational Communication


Tim Todd grew up in Dawson Springs, Kentucky and graduated from Western Kentucky University in 1988 and 1990 with a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree, respectively, in organizational communication. In 1994, Tim graduated from North Carolina State University with his doctorate in adult education / organizational training and development.

During his doctoral pursuit, Tim worked as the assistant to the director of a multi-million dollar grant on community development and empowerment in the upper Southeast United States (Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina). In July of 1995, Tim successfully competed in a national search for an assistant professor of organizational communication at Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky, which has enabled him to begin his journey of “making a difference” in Kentucky. He assumed this role on August 1, 1995 and currently possesses the responsibilities of teaching, conducting research, and providing service to the university, community, state, and region. He has led and been involved in organizational training & development activities for organizations such as General Electric, Briggs and Stratton, Bristol Meyers / Squibb, Peoples Security Finance, the Kentucky Consumer Finance Association, Phillip Morris, Baptist Healthcare Systems, Jewish Hospitals, the police departments of Paducah, Kentucky and Murray, Kentucky, and the Chambers of Commerce of Paducah, KY and Murray, KY. He also performs comprehensive statistical analyses of ongoing organizational climate surveys of the Briggs & Stratton workforce throughout the United States.

On July 1, 1998, Tim was appointed as Interim Assistant Provost of Murray State University and assumed duties in this central administrative position until June 30, 2000 at which time he became Assistant Provost. On July 1, 2001, he earned tenure at Murray State University and was promoted to associate professor of organizational communication housed in the College of Business and Public Affairs. On July 1, 2003, he was promoted to Associate Provost of Murray State University.

Associate Professor of Education

Course Taught: ADM 624 - School and Community Relations; ADM 657 - Educational Policy and Ethics


Dr. Yeatts began her career in the Commonwealth of Virginia as a teacher, assistant principal, and elementary principal. She moved to Murray in 1997 to become principal of Southwest Calloway Elementary School. In 2001, she began teaching full time at Murray State University in the department of Educational Studies, Leadership and Counseling. She teaches courses in Educational Policy and Ethics, The School Principal, Community and School Relations, and Seminar and Practicum in Educational Leadership. Dr. Yeatts is a 1979 graduate of Averett College, with a BS in Elementary Education; a 1982 graduate of The University of Virginia, with an MA in Education, emphasis in Curriculum and Instruction; and a 1997 graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University with an Ed.D. in Educational Administration.

Assistant Professor of Telecommunications Systems Management


Dr. Badasyan received her Ph.D. in 2004 from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, her M.B.A. in 1996 from American University of Armenia, and her B.S. in 1993 from Yerevan State University. Dr. Badasyan currently teaches principles of microeconomics and economics and public policy of telecommunications industry. Her research interests include game theory, economics of networks, economics of the Internet, and experimental economics. Dr. Badasyan was previously employed by Export Association of Machine Tool Enterprises in Armenia, United States Agency of International Development (USAID), and The Eurasia Foundation Small Business and Loan Program.

Assistant Professor of Telecommunications Systems Management


Dr. Mike Bowman is currently an Assistant Professor of Telecommunications System Management at Murray State University where he teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in Telecommunications, Information/Network/Computer Security, and Computer Science. He retired from the United States Army in 2005 at the rank of Colonel after 26 years of service. From 1993 to 2005 his primary responsibility was the management of large scale research, development, and acquisition programs for military communications, command and control, and intelligence systems His fields of expertise include information system security, communication systems and networking, artificial intelligence, knowledge engineering, and military command-control-communications and computer (C4) systems. Dr. Bowman earned a PhD in 2002 from George Mason University with study and research for the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) investigating advanced methods in artificial intelligence, knowledge engineering and intelligent agents for real-world, complex problem solving in the military domain.

Dr. Bowman is the Chair and project leader for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) International Science and Technology workgroup investigating Tactical Communications in Urban Operations (IST 067). He is the Principle Investigator (PI) for a U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to align Murray State University computer/network/information security courses with Federal Information Assurance education guidelines, and a participant in the Man-Portable Tactical Operations Center (MITOC) Department of Homeland Security funded research project being conducted by the Kentucky Homeland Security University Consortium. His publications include articles in AI Magazine, Military Review, and Crosstalk; a book chapter on the development of intelligent agents; and a variety of papers in conference proceedings and professional journals. Dr. Bowman is a member of ITERA, IEEE, ACM, AAAI, and AFCEA.

Dr. Bonnie L. McNeely is an Associate Professor of Business Management. She earned her doctoral degree in 1991 in the area of Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management from the University of South Carolina. Dr. McNeely has been teaching for seventeen years at Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky. She also has been certified in management.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Telecommunications Systems Management

The past six years Mr. Rice have been a Visiting Assistant Professor at Murray State University working in the Telecommunications System Managements (TSM) program. He has helped develop and teach both undergraduate and graduate TSM courses that have a large critical thinking and applied knowledge component. The diverse objectives of the TSM program and the applied knowledge of the TSM curriculum mirror the experiences he gained the previous sixteen years he spent in the computer industry where he held progressively responsible positions in the areas of systems development, and systems services. His analytical and technical experiences in the industry range from developing real-time systems in assembly language to the design and nationwide implementation of a large Client-Server application with a then leading edge intranet component. Mr. Rice's management experiences were gained in industry where he successfully managed numerous diverse projects from conception to implementation gaining a wide range of systems development methodologies and deployment experiences. Mr. Rice also gained international technical and management experience in Europe with Department of Defense and NATO projects. Interpersonal experiences were the basis of his ascent up the corporate ladder, whether to his team, his management or his customers Mr. Rice demonstrated highly effective interpersonal and communication skills. Highlights range from communications with and presentations to presidential appointees in the federal government controlling budgets in excess of $1 Billion to very large diverse user groups. Mr. Rice gained significant business development experiences as he progressively demonstrated the vision to leverage past successes and an ability to think outside the box.

Professor of Accounting

Dr. Seay, Professor of Accounting, has served on the Murray State University faculty since 1985. He received the Doctor of Business Administration, with a major in accounting and minors in Finance and Information Systems/Quantitative Analysis, from Mississippi State University. Dr. Seay currently teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in cost/managerial accounting and auditing. He is a Certified Public Accountant with practical experience in public accounting and internal auditing. Dr. Seay publishes in professional and academic journals. His hobbies include boating, golf, and travel. He is a sports enthusiast and a percussionist.
