Career
Outlook

|
Economics is the largest
field among the social sciences. Over 40,000 economists use their
understanding of economic relationships to advise various types of
business firms, government research firms and agencies, banks,
management consulting firms, investment companies, advertising firms,
and utility companies. Private industry accounts for about half of all
careers in economics. Most government economists research and advise in
the fields of agriculture, finance, labor, transportation, urban
economics, and international trade. Many students also find economics to
be an excellent preparation for graduate study in law and business. For
more detailed salary and job information visit the Dept. of
Transportation's Occupational
Outlook Handbook. Note that those with bachelors degrees in
Economics received starting offers over $2,000 greater than those with
degrees in Marketing and the median base salary for business economists
was $73,000 in 1996! |

The faculty of the College of Business and Public Affairs takes pride in
helping their students obtain jobs after graduation. Murray State
University's Career Services Office arranges on-campus visits by firms
both large and small and helps students set up interviews with these
firms. In addition, various clubs and organizations within the college
provide advice from former graduates about job hunting as well as
conduct trips to various area businesses for a first-hand look at the
business environment. Murray State graduates have found excellent jobs
in field from banking to government to businesses of all types. |

Economics
Programs |
The economics
major is a four-year liberal arts degree program leading to either a
bachelor of arts or a bachelor of science. The first two years are spent
completing a set of general education requirements that include courses
in English, mathematics, physical and social science, humanities and
fine arts. The bachelor of arts also requires study of a modern foreign
language. The last two years are used to complete the required
upper-level courses in economic theory and applications to various
fields, such as money and banking, international trade, and comparative
economic systems.
As with all major degree programs at Murray State, an outside minor must
also be completed to broaden the student's undergraduate education.
Economics majors can choose from a wide variety of minors, including
international studies; history; political science; mathematics; English;
or any of the traditional business disciplines, such as accounting,
marketing, management or finance. In addition, the economics major allow
for a significant number of upper-level elective courses, giving
students a great deal of flexibility in designing their own personalized
degree program in consultation with their adviser.
For those students wishing to major in another field, the Department of
Economics and Finance also offers minors in economics, international
economics and business economics. These minors would nicely complement
any other liberal arts major and provide the student with a solid core
of economics courses that could be counted toward most M.B.A. degree
programs after graduation.

Master of
Science in Economics |
In addition to the
major, the department also offers a Master
of Science degree in Economics and an MS degree with a concentration
in Finance. Both degrees are excellent preparation for students who want
advanced training in economics. These programs are especially useful to
students who want an edge in the job market or who would like additional
training to prepare themselves for a Ph. D. program. This program is
very popular, attracting students from around the world.
