Quality of our life
depends on quality of our environment. Human activities including
domestic, industrial and agricultural activities greatly affect
environmental quality leading to increased cancer rate and other
health effects. Therefore, research on environmental pollutants in
air, water, soil, and food materials, their levels and effects on
wildlife and humans are important to prevent further contamination
and harmful effects.
Dr. Loganathan’s research
interests include toxic environmental pollutants such as polychlorinated
biphenyls (PCBs), pesticides (DDT, HCB, HCHs, chlordane, chlorpyrifos
etc.), dioxins, dibenzofurans and butyl/phenyltins, their distribution,
environmental behavior, fate and their effect on wildlife and human
health.
On-going research include: (1)
Regional environmental monitoring and biogeochemistry of the pollutants in
Kentucky Lake and Barkley Lakes (2) Effect of organic and organometallic
pollutants on cancer fighting ability in humans and (3) Track-down of PCB
sources in New York-New Jersey harbors.
Students who work in his laboratory
will get training in trace level (parts per billion/parts per trillion)
analysis of synthetic organic and organometallic pollutants in
environmental (air, water, soil and sediment) and biological (fish,
shellfish and human tissues) samples using state-of-the-art
instrumentation and computers.
