Chemistry Department receives NMR
Grant from NSF:
The MSU Department of Chemistry has
been awarded $204,000 by the National Science Foundation for the
purchase of a 400-MHz NMR Spectrometer. The grant comes as a result
of a proposal written by professors Kevin Revell, Ricky Cox, and
Edie Banner, and will enable to department to enhance the technical
training of its students and the caliber of research which can be
performed. The instrument will be the only high-field NMR in the
far-west Kentucky region.
The acquisition of this instrument has been a high priority for the
department in recent years and will support its mission of
innovative research and high-quality teaching. NMR spectroscopy
provides intricate detail about the structure and even the
interaction of molecules, and is considered a vital component for
the development and study of new materials. At Murray State, this
instrument will support a number of exciting ongoing projects. For
example, Dr. Johnson is conducting studies on new ionic liquid
materials, Dr. Cox is studying the fundamental nature of how
biomedically-important molecules interact with proteins, and Dr. Revell is
working to develop new functional materials for applications in
devices such as transistors and solar cells.
