The thesis option requires 24 semester hours of graduate level course work plus six hours of thesis credit. Students selecting the thesis option must complete a minimum of 12 hours of formal 600 level courses excluding GSC 644 (Graduate Cooperative Education) and GSC 698 and 699 (Thesis). During the first two semesters in residence the student selecting the thesis option will concentrate on completion of course work. By the end of the second semester the student should have a thesis topic selected in consultation with the thesis chairperson, a Geoscience Graduate Committee member.
A thesis proposal should be submitted and approved before the student enrolls in GSC 698/699. The third semester should include course work and thesis research with the final semester emphasizing thesis completion. Graduate courses offered in other departments that are closely related to the course of study might also be applied to the degree with permission of the Department Graduate Committee. Proficiency in quantitative methods through MAT 565 is also required. These hours do not apply to the 30 hour degree. The thesis option is intended for those who wish to conduct research and/or pursue a degree beyond the masters.
