Dr. Terry Derting (left) Recieves KAS Award

The Kentucky Academy of Science (KAS) is proud to announce that the winner of the 2006 KAS Superlative Award for Outstanding College/University Teacher is Dr. Terry Derting, Professor of Biological Sciences at Murray State University. Dr. Derting received her doctorate from Indiana University; M.A from Virginia Polytechnic Institute; and B.A. from Mount Holyoke College. She is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Society of Mammalogists, Association of College and University Biology Educators, Council on Undergraduate Research, and the BioQUEST Curriculum Consortium. She has served as the President and Vice President of the Association of College and University Biology Educators; as associate editor of Undergraduate Research in Behavior, Ecology and Evolution; and as president of the Murray Chapter of Sigma Xi. As stated in one of her letters of support for the Superlative award, "Dr. Derting is the essence of a scientist and teacher." She not only practices the paradigm shift that we advocate in undergraduate education - moving from "me as the teacher" in center stage to "you as the learner" - she's helped invent it and helped others adopt it.
The Superlative Awards recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions to scientific research and education in the commonwealth of Kentucky. The award was presented at the 92nd annual KAS meeting hoster recently by Morehead State University.
The Kentucky Academy of Science, www.kyscience.org, encourages scientific research and promotes the dissemination of the scientific interests of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Established in 1914, the Academy is an Affiliate of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the National Association of Academies of Science.
