Local High School Students visit the Cyber Cave located in the Collins Technology Center on MSU's campus

Cutting Edge Communications Technology Available to Regional High School Students

Regional high schools students can now explore cutting edge telecommunications technology thanks to grant funding by the U.S. Department of Education. The CyberCave is sponsored and supported by faculty and staff from Murray State University's Program of Distinction in Telecommunications Systems Management (TSM).
"We feel strongly that the opportunity for students to use real world communication tools in an open exploratory environment is unparalleled" said John Hart, Coordinator of the project.
Students work hands on with notebook and palmtop computers that are linked with a wireless network, videoconferencing telephones, telephone switching equipment and a remote tele-presence unit named Telebot. Also included in the lab are biometric security systems including thumbprint and iris scanners which are currently used in our national security initiatives.
Shea Lowe, Marketing Specialist for the Center for Telecommunications Systems Management states that "The CyberCave is an excellent opportunity to provide area high school students a look at the TSM program."
This past summer 17 students from across Kentucky attended a week-long workshop in which they built a complex multi-site network representing sites in four different cities. The week consisted of 5 days of technology instruction along with extracurricular activities at night. Campers could choose between residential housing or commuting, and three meals a day were provided to each student at no cost.

Equipment in the CyberCave is so advanced that any one high school could not afford the expense, but by locating the investment on Murray State's campus, the U.S. Office of Education has provided a unique educational opportunity to a large number of students in the Commonwealth.

If you know of a group that would like to visit the CyberCave, please contact Shea Lowe at shea.lowe@murraystate.edu or (270) 762-5391 to reserve a time slot.
