New Scholarships Available at
Murray State University

Murray State University has received a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for $254,374 to provide scholarships to students majoring in engineering, engineering technology, mathematics, and computer science. The award is an extension of an existing scholarship program, which will provide more than $450,000 in scholarships to MSU students through the year 2004.
By NSF guidelines, the scholarship funds will be awarded to undergraduate students who are eligible for Pell Grant assistance and also to graduate students in these technical areas of national need. In the 2001-2002 academic year, the scholarships will be targeted to students who are within two years of completion of their degree programs. The individual award amount will be $2,500 per year. In the 2002-2004 academic years, underclassmen, including incoming freshmen, will become eligible for the scholarship and the award amount will increase to $3,125 per year.

The scholarships are primarily intended to help students complete their degrees without having to rely on off-campus employment according to Dr. Stephen Cobb, chairman of the department of physics and engineering and project director. Dr. Cobb initiated the scholarship program along with co-directors Dr. Don Bennett, chairman of the department of mathematics and statistics, Dr. Danny Claiborne, chairman of the department of industrial and engineering technology, and Carmen Garland, director of the MSU Scholarship Office.
Students interested in the scholarship program should contact any of the project directors for scholarship application forms. Questions may be directed to the department of physics and engineering at MSU, 270-762-2993 or 1-800-648-1334.
