Mitchum Owen and Tera Rica Murdock

CSET Students Named MSU 2006 Outstanding Senior Man and Woman

     The Outstanding Senior Man and Woman at Murray State University for 2006 were announced May 4, during the Senior Breakfast. Mitchum Owen and Tera Rica Murdock were selected for the honor.
     Owen is an electronic media major from Buchanan, Tenn., with minors in telecommunications systems management and business administration. Murdock is majoring in chemistry and Spanish and is from Murray.
     Mitchum, who has a perfect 4.0 grade point average, is the son of Mary Kay Dykes and Jerry Owen, both of Paris, Tenn. Tera Rica’s parents are Rick and Stacy Murdock of Murray. Her grade point average is 3.86 out of 4.0.
     During his time at Murray State, Owen has been a Dean’s List student and an officer in honor societies including Phi Eta Sigma and Alpha Chi, and a member of Alpha Lambda Delta, Sigma Eta, Kappa Tau Alpha, National Residence Hall Honorary, National Society of Collegiate Scholars and the MSU Honors Program. He has also been named to Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.
     Owen’s honors include selection as a Ronald E. McNair Scholar and a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholar. In addition, he received the International Award for MSU Rotaract Webpage Design and was honored for writing one of MSU’s six “Best Student Essays.”
     He is a member of Springer-Franklin College and the Aerho National Broadcasting Society, Foreign Language Club, Rotaract, Honors Program Council, Association of Telecommunications Systems Management and the Association of Information Technology Professionals. Owen has served the campus as a student ambassador, an international ambassador and a freshman year leader.
     He produced Postcards from Spain for MSU TV-11 and as a KET2 documentary series, and Postcards from the American West as a mini-documentary for TV-11.
     A National Student Exchange took Owen to the University of Memphis in Tennessee for one year of study. He studied in Segovia, Spain, through MSU's Kentucky Institute for International Studies for one semester.
     Owen’s career-related experience includes website management for several organizations and internships with the communications department of Virginia Farm Bureau and Ferry Morse Seed Company. His future plans include involvement with e-commerce and then graduate school.
     A Dean's List student, Murdock is a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa, Alpha Mu Gamma, Gamma Sigma Alpha, Gamma Beta Phi and Alpha Chi honor societies, as well as a member of the MSU Honors Program and an honorary member of Sigma Xi. She was also named to Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges, and was the recipient of the Sigma Xi Award for Best Undergraduate Research Poster and the ACS Division of Analytical Chemistry Undergraduate Award. Murdock was named a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Undergraduate Research Scholar for two consecutive years.
     She has served as an officer in the Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society, the Student Government Association Judicial Board, the Honors Program Council and Alpha Omicron Pi social sorority. Memberships include the Pre-Health Professional Club, Leadership Murray State and Foreign Language Club. In addition, she served the university as a student ambassador and is a member of Hart College.
     Murdock studied abroad in Segovia, Spain, for a semester and in Morelia, Mexico, for a month through the university’s Kentucky Institute for International Study.
     Her professional experience includes serving as a research assistant in the department of chemistry at MSU, several research presentations and the publication in a professional journal of a paper she co-authored. Her post-graduation plan is to attend law school.
     Both Owen and Murdock spoke at the May 2006 Commencement ceremonies.      Commencement was held on Saturday, May 13, at 10 a.m. in the Regional Special Events Center.
